CONFESSIONS OF AN ESCORT

After a few more photos we walk into the house with his hand on my waist.

‘Your full name is?’ he whispers and I want to laugh

The room almost looks like it is still festive season, everyone is in red and white. I notice the disapproving look from Urah, some other lady is looking at me funny and the man who I am guessing is his father has this look that I can’t figure out.

‘You must be Kat.’ An elderly woman says coming to where we are

‘Yes ma’am.’ I respond with a smile

‘Glad to meet you, we were surprised when Francis told us that he was bringing a girl. Otherwise we wouldn’t have invited Martha here.’

The lady who I believe is Martha comes forward, she does look like the type that would date him.

‘Attorney Muyunda.’ She says extending her hand

‘Katie.’ I respond

I am not about to start competing with anyone over titles

‘I see you are a rebellious one.’ She says taking in my outfit

I just smile without a word

‘Please join us.’ His mother says

I sit just next to Francis, Martha is directly opposite us. On one end are his parents and on the other Mark and Urah.

‘Young lady didn’t he tell you that this was a themed dinner?’ his father asks speaking for the first time

‘Honey.’ His wife says lovingly

‘He did.’ I respond

‘And you decided to disobey him? Embarrass him in front of his parents?’

‘Dad.’ Francis says

‘I want her out and I don’t ever want to see her again, your mother was a disciplined woman not this.’ He says his word final

Everyone is looking at me expecting me to stand and leave but I don’t.

‘Young lady didn’t you hear me?’

‘With all due respect sir, your son invited me here. And I am sorry to disrespect you in your house but if he hasn’t asked me to leave, I won’t, and why does it matter what color everyone wears? It’s just dinner.’ I say not once removing my gaze from his

I see his wife open her mouth to say something but she closes it

‘Who raised you?’ he asks on his feet

‘I raised myself.’ I answer back

Everyone looks from me to him, waiting for who is going to speak next.

He angrily walks out of the dinning room and everyone remains looking at me, but after a few minutes he is back this time around wearing black. I smile

‘You want to look like you are mourning, how about we make it the two of us?’ he asks settling back into his seat

‘You look good in black.’ I say and he just shakes his head ‘So, Katie, what do you do for a living?’ Martha asks

‘I am a mum.’ I say without even thinking twice ‘You have a child?’ Francis asks

Everyone stares at us realizing that he doesn’t know this detail about me ‘Yes, sweetheart I have a child.’

‘And you didn’t tell me about this?’ he asks on his feet ‘I just did.’

He walks out and in my head I am settled that this is a family of men who just like walking out of situations.

Martha looks at me

‘You won’t follow him?’

‘And do what?’

‘Explain yourself for the lies of course.’

‘No matter how bad the situation you don’t walk out on your partner, he will come around.’

‘You don’t know him.’ She says almost sounding hurt

‘And that is why you should thank God that he is not yours but mine.’ I say and she runs after him

‘I will get us some beer.’ Mark says getting up

‘Katie can you help me with the dishes?’ his mother asks

‘Urah please keep these two company.’ She says pointing at her husband and Mark

‘Sure.’ Urah responds

I help her with removing the dishes from the table and we head to the kitchen

‘How old is your child?’

‘He is eight, turning nine in two days.’

‘Wow.’

‘At what age did you have him?’

‘Eighteen.’ I say without any remorse

‘Tell me about him.’

I lean against the kitchen table and smile

‘Sean is the brightest child I know, the most emotionally attached being I have ever met. He cares about the people around him and he has the biggest heart. Too mature for his age and he thinks I am his child, also he is skinny because he refuses to eat healthy.’ I say with a sigh

She laughs

‘The last part.’

‘It’s the truth.’

‘Bring him tomorrow, I would love to cook something healthy for him.’

‘Well if your husband will still be okay with me showing up after the little stunt I pulled.’

‘Don’t worry you are more than welcome, every once in a while, we all need a challenge.’ She says with a wink

‘That nonsense about you being a mum, what exactly do you do?’

‘I am a doctor.’

‘You are?’

‘Yes ma’am.’

‘She owns St. Mathias Children’s Hospital.’ Urah says walking in on us

‘No.’ Francis’ mother says

‘Yes.’ Urah says

‘I wouldn’t have guessed in a million years.’

I smile, I hate it when people start looking at me differently because of what I carry to my name

‘Can I have a word with you?’ Francis says coming to the kitchen ‘Yes please.’ I respond dipping my hands in my back pockets ‘Was nice chatting with you ma’am.’ ‘You too dear.’

He walks me to the garden, away from everyone else.

‘I am not paying you for the nonsense that you just put up.’ ‘Your father could have chased me but he didn’t.’ I argue ‘No one has ever stood up to him like that, you are a first.’ ‘You are welcome.’ I say rolling my eyes

Silence

‘I am expecting to see you here tomorrow.’

‘Ask like a gentleman.’ I say knowing this is my chance to get back at him

‘Really?’

‘Yes Francis.’

‘Katie would you please come and join us tomorrow again?’ ‘Nop.’

‘What the hell woman I asked nicely.’

‘And I said no.’

He sighs

‘Add a thousand to my money.’

‘What?’

‘It’s about the money remember.’

‘Whatever.’

‘Oh, your mother already invited me. I would have still come but I could use some extra money.’ I say laughing

‘You are the devil’s advocate.’

‘Thank you.’ I respond with a smile

‘She wants me to come with my child too.’

‘I don’t care.’

I almost feel hurt but shield the emotions as quickly as they come.

‘Good night Francis, tell your people I am off.’ I say walking away as the night breeze hits my face
