David was dumbfounded after he had heard what Omolara said.

“What? Why would he do such a thing? ” David asked.

“He is afraid we would rat him out. ” She replied.

“Rat him out? How? ” He asked.

“Don Carlos runs a drug business inside the club. There is an inner chamber where he meets with his customers and transact business. ” She explained. “But what does that got to do with you? ”

“Don’t you understand, we don’t just stripe alone, we also help in the inner chamber. Sometimes we even deliver goods to some special customers.” “Jesus Christ ! Since when have you been working for him? ” David asked. “It’s been four years. ”

“It must have been hell. But can’t you abscond or travel somewhere far along with your family?” He suggested.

“Someone already tried it last year, it ended badly for her. ” Lara said.

“What happened to her? ” David asked anxiously.

“Tina died horribly. ” She said.

FLASH BACK TO A YEAR AGO

Lara and Tina stood by the road side looking for bus after a long night of work.

“Where are all these buses? Am so tired I can’t wait to get home and lay on my

bed. ” Lara said.

“Same here.” Tina said.

“Tina am so tired of this job, I wish there is a way I could quit? ” Lara lamented. “We are in this together baby girl.” Tina spoke. She sighed before she continued. “Cherry am not supposed to tell you this but you are my best friend and I know you can keep secret. This would be the last time you are ever going to see me here .” Tina said.

“What do you mean? ” Lara asked anxiously.

“Am done working for that bastard. Am leaving town together with my family. ” Tina said.

“That’s risky, you know Don is going to kill you if he finds out.”

“I would have been long gone before he knows. I have it all planned out.” Tina assured.

A bus going to Lara’s area came and she went with the bus leaving her friend alone.

The following day, Don called all his employees together for a meeting.

“I am very disappointed in you girls. Despite all I have been doing, you girls are ingrates. One of you made up her mind to betray me. She thought she was smart and could run off but she forgot that there is only one way of getting out of here, Death. ” He brought out a picture of Tina lying dead and showed it to them all.

“Let this serve as a lesson for you. You are welcome to run but remember that no matter how fast you run, you will never be able to out run your shadow. ” He threatened.

BACK TO PRESENT

Omolara and David were still sitting at the beach.

“The police found her body the next day. They did an autopsy and discovered that she died of drug abuse. ” Lara said.

“So the man is that dangerous? ” David asked in surprise.

“That’s why I will advise you to please leave me to my destiny and move on with

your life. ” Lara said.
