Three Empty Words – Episode 9
_09_
I had no idea that I could ever have so much fun, I grew up a reserved person. Mostly because I was scared and didn’t have so much confidence in myself. The past few weeks had been great, Kelvin was so much fun to be with. He didn’t force me to talk, in fact he is the one that did most of the talking. He made jokes and cracked my ribs whenever he could, something that only mum was capable of doing.
Today he had driven all the way to Chisamba just to come and see me, mum was in Kafue doing décor for a client and I was just alone with the workers.
‘Hey I am here.’ He said when I picked up my ringing phone
I didn’t know how to act, I had never invited anyone to come to my place much less a man.
I walked to the front door and watched as his car drove into the yard, ours was a farm but we were more into animal husbandry.
I waved at him as if signaling him to come my way, he parked his grey range rover just next to mum’s other car. He was clad in blue shorts with a black collar t shirt, on his feet were a pair of masai slippers. He looked divine.
‘Hey.’ He said hugging me
He smelt amazing too.
‘I hope I am not sweaty, you know Lusaka is a long way from here.’ He said letting me go
‘No you don’t.’ I said shyly
I walked us to the house and led him to the living room.
‘Make yourself at home.’ I said with a smile
He settled for a twin chair.
‘I love what you guys have done to this place, it is beautiful.’ ‘Thank you, mum’s work.’ I responded
We talked a bit about his trip then I offered him some lime juice.
‘Thank you.’ He responded
We talked some more then realized it was lunch and he probably was starving. ‘Let me prepare something to eat.’ I told him
Under normal circumstances, the maid would have cooked but I chose to do that for him since he was my guest.
‘How about I help out in the kitchen.’ He offered ‘Uhm, even better.’
We decided to prepare nshima with fresh pumpkin leaves from the garden and caterpillars, funny enough we had the same taste in food.
‘This is the first time I am eating caterpillars with tomato you know.’ He said putting some in his mouth
‘I actually love them like this.’
We ate some more talking about random stuff, afterwards we did the dishes together and decided to watch a movie together.
After debating on what we would watch, we finally settled for pitch perfect three; which of course was my idea and he promised to get back at me for it. *
XENO
I thought I could go through with the abortion but a part of me was scared, I thought I was strong but when the doctor had told me all the side effects; I got them but I decided I wanted to go home and think through it first before drinking them.
I texted Nthando telling him that I got the pills but would drink them once I got home in Chisamba, all the way I kept thinking of everything that could go wrong. I was a wild girl and showed myself to be strong to the rest of the world but inside I was scared. More @ TOPSTER STORIES

I wiped the tears that had been falling the whole way when I drove into the yard, there was a strange car in the car park and I wondered who the guest was.
I took a deep breath then carried my handbag and walked to the house, I stopped dead in my tracks when I found Xenia and a man seated together in the living room laughing. From what I could make out, they were watching a movie and busy laughing together. He had her right hand in his and was gently and lovingly stroking it and she didn’t mind at all. It was like she was a totally different person all together.
‘Xenia.’ I said in an angry tone
She turned to look at me, her cold stare scaring me ‘Hai.’ She said then focused her eyes back to the screen
The man did the same too, he didn’t even bother to spare a second glance at me. I couldn’t stand there anymore, I was so embarrassed and angry. How was it that I, the one that always took time to check my looks couldn’t even get a man to lovingly stroke my fingers and here was my sister; so plain and yet with such a man.
I banged the door behind me and screamed my lungs out throwing the bag on the bed. I got my ringing phone and picked up.
‘What!’ I screamed
‘Have you taken the pills yet?’
I laughed, an anguish laughter.
‘What is funny?’
‘I am keeping it.’ I said not even believing myself ‘You must be crazy.’ He said, his voice cold
‘You better tell that fiancé of yours that the wedding is not going through because you impregnated someone and you have to raise the child with her.’
There was silence, I could hear Nthando’s breathing on the other end of the line. ‘You can keep it, it’s your body after all.’ He said calmly
‘Just like that? It’s my body after all?’
‘Xeno tell me what you want me to tell you that you don’t know already, it was just sex and honestly you are not the kind of woman I would have loved to mother my child. But it has already happened, keep the pregnancy; my child won’t be the first to be born out of wedlock not so?’
‘Damn you Nthando!’ I screamed before throwing the phone against the wall I was upset and needed to cool down, I needed something strong to calm my nerves. I stripped off of my clothes and wore a bum short with a vest then walked to the mini bar. I poured myself a glass of whisky then walked to the living room, if I was having a bad day; so would Xenia.
‘You are wasting your time.’ I blurted
The two turned to look at me
‘Xeno I am not ready to argue with you.’
‘I wasn’t talking to you corpse!’ I said clicking my tongue
‘Do you know that she is a living corpse?’ I asked and I could see tears build up in Xenia’s eyes, exactly what I had anticipated and wanted The man stood up and squared me.
‘I don’t know what your deal is but if she dies, this world would have lost a jewel. The good die young not so?’ he asked
I lifted my hand to slap him but he held it.
‘I will allow you to insult me but never at her in my presence.’ He said with a stern voice
I forcefully removed my mind from his grip then clicked my tongue
‘I guess we are on the same page.’ He said before I angrily walked back to my room.
