I rushed to the hospital as soon as I got the phone call, I dropped Oswald at the office before heading there. By the time I was getting there she was already connected to a drip.

‘Oh my God Melisa.’ I said as fear submerged through me

She turned to look at me, her face looked weak but she still managed to smile. ‘Hey handsome.’ She said weakly

‘Hey baby.’ I responded kissing her forehead

‘I am sorry I wasn’t around to take better care of you.’ I said honestly seating just next to her

She smiled and ran her hand on my face.

‘It isn’t your fault, I guess my body just betrayed me.’ She responded The doctor walked in just then.More interesting stories on Topster Stories App

‘Mr. Mtonga.’

‘Mr. Kanyata.’ I said

He had been Melisa’s doctor from the time we got married, most times I teased that he knew her body more than I knew it.

‘How is she?’ I asked

‘Please come with me to my office.’ He said

I walked behind him, taking long strides.

We got to his office and i stood there.

‘Please take a seat.’

I was scared out of my wits but I had to act calm, I was a man after all. ‘Melisa is not really sick.’ He began

I looked at him in shock, I mean she was connected to tubes so why would he say that she wasn’t really sick.

‘Doctor you are joking right?’ I asked with a questioning look ‘I wouldn’t joke about this.’

‘So what are you saying then?’ I asked again

‘Your wife is just tired, we ran all the necessary tests and her body is just okay. Except she is dehydrated I guess from all the sweating.’ He said

I sighed heavily then pushed my back against the chair.

‘Melisa has been over working herself, she needs someone to help her out.’ He suggested

I just sat there quietly wondering and feeling disappointed in myself, how could another man be telling me the things that I should have seen a long time ago. ‘Is there anything else that I need to know, before we take her home?’

He looked at me with a raised eyebrow

‘I need to keep her here, because that is just the first drip of water that I have given her.’

‘You can assign a doctor to come home with us, or a nurse but she is not sleeping here.’ I said now on my feet

He looked defeated, he knew that I wasn’t going back to my word.

I went back to the ward where she was being kept and found the nurse had already started disconnecting the tubes.

‘What have you done?’ she asked seriously

‘Babe what is the point of you being kept in here when you can get the facilities from home?’ I asked

‘Baby you know they are qualified doctors here that can take care of me.’ ‘Those same doctors will go home with us.’ I said almost snapping at her I wasn’t going to have this argument right here and now with her.

I went to sign the discharge papers then an ambulance was brought forward which was used to get her home.

I had called our house manager to prepare our room for her and so setting up the room wasn’t hard once she was in.

‘I didn’t mean to disrespect you.’ She began once we were the two of us.’

‘I know you didn’t.’ I said with a smile

She was a good woman and I knew everything she did was for me and the kids. ‘Don’t you have to be at work right now?’ she asked

‘I won’t be going to work for the next few days. I will be wife sitting.’ I said causing her to laugh

‘Jason I am fine.’ She said stretching out her hand ‘I know you are, but I want to be here.’ I responded

I sat next to her and read her some of her favorite magazines until she slept. I looked at the time and realized I had not yet called Oswald to tell him that I wouldn’t be going for work in a while.

I went to my study and immediately dialed his line, he picked up on the first ring. ‘Boss.’ He said

I heard the noise in the background, he was probably getting himself drunk being a half day at work.

‘How does your wife put up with you?’ I asked

He knew what he meant, I didn’t drink and I just couldn’t understand how a

woman could sleep on the same bed with a man that smelled of liquor.

‘Doreen loves me, that is all that matters.’ He responded followed by laughter

‘Yeah right.’ I said seating down

‘So how is Madam doing?’

‘She is getting better, I moved her home.’

‘I am not surprised.’

I scratched my head.

‘Okay so I called to let you know that I won’t be going to the office in the next few

day, so you will be in charge.’

‘What?’ he asked surprised

I am pretty sure in that moment he got sober

‘But you are so good at your job, I could never do half the things that you do.’ He said

I laughed

‘Oswald you have been my assistant for years, you know my schedule at the back of your head and I am pretty sure a few days won’t be much.’ I said

didn’t doubt his capability.

‘But the story with Mark Anthony Printers?’

‘Oh yes, I have the journalists number. Let me forward it to you so that you get started with her. Don’t hesitate to drop her if you feel she is incompetent.’ ‘But don’t you think it would be best if you worked with her yourself?’

‘Oswald I don’t have that time, we both don’t have the time. You know every second is an opportunity for the opposition to bring us down. I trust what you can do, so don’t let me down.’ I said before dropping the line I searched through my wallet and found the card.

‘Ms. Mwila.’ It read

I got a picture of the card and forwarded it to Oswald with the instruction for him to call her and set up a meeting so that she could start working on the story.
