PEARL’S POV

After, I was done with the guitar, I thought it was time to go home.

 

I hummed to a tune and walked, swinging my arms in the air.

 

When I was a few feet away from my cottage, I saw Megan shouting angrily at Aria. I strained my ears to hear what he was saying but I couldn’t hear anything.

 

Whatever it is, how dare him shout at my friend! Can’t he see how my friend is already shaken up?

 

I will teach him a lesson for good.

 

I waltzed angrily but stopped when I heard him talking about reporting something to the Police.

 

I listened closely and realized that my friends were at fault.

 

I looked at the guilty face of Betsy to conclude.

 

 

How could they do such a thing? I thought I told her about the possible outcomes.

 

Okay, so he said they took advantage of his helplessness and I on the other hand, stole his guitar.

Before anything get out of hand, I have to go to the police now!

 

I turned around slowly and started dragging my feet on the ground soundlessly. “Stop right there!”

 

I stopped instantly as my shoulder stiffened. I closed my eyes tightly as my hands tightened on the guitar.

 

That was Megan’s voice and it’s only a matter of time before he gets to me. That’s it!

 

I heard his footsteps towards me.

 

I quickly walked and hid in the woods at the back of our cottage.

 

He came there but he didn’t enter the woods.

 

“Why are you being a coward now miss, I thought you were the heroine some hours ago?”

 

I went silent and refused to talk.

 

“Alright! Keep hiding while I call the cops on you and your friends.” What? The police?

 

No I can’t let this happen!

 

 

I got up from my hiding place but he has already started calling the police. “Am here now Megan, please don’t call the police.”

 

“Your being here doesn’t change a thing! I will spare you simply because you saved me but not your friends miss.” He walked to where Aria, grandpa and Betsy stood.

 

Thank God he doesn’t know my name. I followed him as well.

 

He started dialing a number on Aria’s phone.

 

“Don’t please!”

 

“Why?”

 

“Because..” I stopped and stared at the sad and guilty look on my best friends face.

 

I can’t let them go to jail for something that was my fault.

 

“I don’t have all day so make it snappy.”

 

“I mean, that they haven’t done anything, it was my plan all along. So if there’s someone to be arrested, it’s me.” I said with difficulty.

 

“Pearl?” Granny called and walked to me.

 

“What are you saying my child?”

 

“That’s the truth granny and am sorry for being foolish.”

 

“No Pearl. You know your grandpa can’t do without you for even a single day.”

 

“Yes Pearl. It was me and Aria’s Idea so why must you get punished for it?” Betsy said.

 

 

If I hadn’t saved him and brought him home, none of this would’ve occurred so am solely responsible.

 

Before, I could reply, the police were already surrounding us.

 

I swallowed nervously as a bunch of macho men also arrived.

 

I let go of the guitar as tears threatened to fall when I saw my granny already crying.

 

Those who were around left.

 

“Sir please don’t let them take my granddaughter away I beg of you please. Please don’t! I won’t be able to live without her please sir.” Granny fell to the ground and wept.

 

“Okay, I’ve heard you old man but it’s two things. Do you want her in jail or her face on media and later get arrested for kidnapping?” Megan said rather wickedly.

 

“What are you saying Megan?”

 

“You heard right notorious Pearl.” He said with a smirk and took his guitar from where I left it on the ground.

 

And now he knows my name.

 

He started playing. It’s obvious he’s having fun out of this. Was this the guy I thought to be lovely? What at all has he been taught?

 

“You would do no such thing Megan. I’m going to go with the police.”

 

Great! Officers do your job.” They came and handcuffed me.

 

“No don’t take my granddaughter away. She hasn’t done anything. Betsy please tell them she did nothing and you Aria? Won’t you say anything? Will you keep staring at your friend just like that?” Toby said through tears.

 

 

“I’ll be fine granny. Please just take care of yourself for me.”

 

“No you can’t leave.” He said but it was too late.

 

I was already taken in the police van. I saw granny running after it but he couldn’t ran far. He fell to the ground and I couldn’t help but weep my eyes out.

 

God please take care of my granny.

 

 

BETSY’S POV

 

I can’t believe what was unfolding in front of me.

 

I can’t believe my foolishness has cost so much. What on Earth came over me that made me agree to Aria’s decision?

 

I looked at the mastermind standing beside me with a remorseful face.

 

“See what you’ve caused Aria?”

 

“I’m sorry Betsy. I didn’t know it will turn out badly like this. Please forgive me.”

 

“I will never forgive you Aria. Not you alone, I won’t be able to forgive myself either. I don’t know for Pearl but if I were to be her, I won’t forgive the culprits.” I lamented.

 

“The deed has already been done Betsy, now we have to look for ways to get Pearl outta there.”

 

“You don’t even sound remorseful a bit. I regret ever agreeing to..” I stopped when I saw Toby falling to the ground with a hand on his chest.

 

I rushed to him before he fell on the ground.

 

“Granny? Granny!”

 

“Get me some water Betsy!” I screamed.

 

“Commoners and their drama.” Megan muttered.

 

“If you can’t help in any way then get the hell outta here Mr Dante!” I screamed my lungs out.

 

“Watch your mouth Miss, you won’t like to see me at my worst.”

 

“You’ve already shown your worst and it’s indeed horrible much to my disappointment.”

 

“Take me out of here before I get an infection which I think I’ve already acquired. I need to disinfect myself.” With that, he left with his men.

 

Aria brought the water and I quickly gave him some to drink.

 

“Help me take him inside please.”

 

Together we helped him inside the cottage.

 

“Pearl. Pearl. My Pearl. Where are you Pearl?” Toby said weakly with his eyes closed.

 

I looked from Aria to Toby. We’re just helpless.

 

He started coughing dryly.

 

“I said I want to see her once. I might die any moment from now so please let me see her.”

 

It’s already late in the evening what can we do now?

 

“Erm Aria?”

 

“Mmm.”

 

“The money, let’s use it to bail Pearl out. I think it’s enough to bail her.”

 

“Bail?” She asked.

 

“Of course bail. Why do you sound surprised anyway? We wanted to help her with the money right? This is no difference, we’re still helping her.”

 

“Do you think Megan will allow for us to bail her out?”

 

“Go do the damn thing and stop giving me baseless excuses. Let’s try at least. We can’t just sit here and do nothing.” I slurred.

 

“Fine. Am going.”

 

“Be back on time. Call me if you need any help.”

 

“Alright.” She said and got out.

 

“Don’t worry granny Toby. Pearl will soon be here.” I assured.

 

“Thanks Betsy. I’m really grateful.”

 

“My pleasure granny.”

 

My phone started ringing and I quickly picked up thinking it was Aria.

 

“Where are you Betsy? Your dad and I have been worried about you.” My mum spoke.

 

“Don’t worry mum. I will be in the house soon. I might not make it though.”

 

“Why? Where are you?”

 

“Am in Pearl’s house mum. Her granny is not doing too well am with him at the moment.”

 

“What happened?”

 

 

“Don’t worry mum. I will handle everything. I’ll also explain everything when am back. Goodnight.”

 

“Goodnight dear, take care.”

 

We ended the call and I quickly went to their kitchen and prepared soup with the dried jellies.

 

“Have some granny.” I said and raised his head on the pillow properly.

 

After feeding him, I got a video call from Aria.

 

I went out and received it.

 

“They refused Betsy.”

 

“On whose orders?”

 

“Who else? Megan of course.” She replied.

 

“Let me speak to the inspector please.”

 

“Alright.” She said and walked back into the police station.

 

“How may I help you young lady?” The inspector asked when Aria brought the phone to him.

 

“Please I need you to release my friend please. She’s innocent.”

 

“Do you have evidence?”

 

I kept quiet.

 

“You don’t have so let me be. Next time.your friend won’t dare play silly pranks on rich kids again. Some jokes are really expensive and what happened to your friend

 

 

is a good example. Now if you wouldn’t mind, I have important things to attend to.” The inspector said.

 

“Is there no other way, inspector?” I asked.

 

“Unless the case is withdrawn.” He replied and gave the phone to Aria.

 

“See? I told you.” Aria said.

 

“You’re right but we can’t give up so easily.”

 

“Look Betsy, I’ve had enough for this day. Mum needs me now and am really tired.” She complained.

 

“But how can you think of leaving me all alone with him?”

 

“Not my problem Betsy. See you tomorrow.” She said and hanged up. How could she?

 

Toby started coughing again so I rushed in.

 

I jumped in fright when I saw him lying on the floor on his back.

 

The corner of his mouth was dripping blood.

I stood transfixed on the same spot for for a minute before rushing to him.

 

“We need to go to the hospital granny.” I said and with great difficulty, I lifted him and placed him back on the bed.

 

“No my child. I just want Pearl.”

 

“Yes, Pearl will come soon but we need to go to the hospital now!” I told him.

 

 

“No Betsy. You don’t understand. I really need to talk to her about something important.”

MEGAN’S POV

 

 

“We’re going to the hotel . We’ll leave tomorrow” I told the driver.” When we left Pearl’s house.

 

I still can’t believe why they did that to me.

 

I would’ve given them a billion if they had asked me after I woke up.

 

I would’ve even given them more for saving my life but for what they did, they’ll deserve to stay behind bars.

 

I can’t believe those commoners dared to lay their infectious hands on me.

 

A whole Megan.

 

When I woke up, I heard a phone buzzing with messages beside me so i thought it was my phone.

 

I took it but realized it wasn’t mine. I was putting it back when my eyes fell on a message that had my name in it.

 

My curiosity heightened and I checked all the messages.

 

I couldn’t believe it. I was beyond livid.

 

I was surprised when Pearl decided to play the heroine again. Even though I knew she wasn’t behind the idea from the messages, I couldn’t trust any of them that’s why I didn’t utter a word when she confessed.

 

But i really felt bad when I saw the old man weeping.

 

 

But what can i do? All of them deserve to be in jail but I took only one person and they should be grateful enough.

 

“Sir we’re here.” The driver announced.

 

I got out and walked to the hotel and straight into the elevator.

 

I got to my room and went to the washroom.

 

After scrubbing myself clean, I came out and wore my pyjamas.

 

After that, I ordered for supper. After eating, I called mum back with my second phone which I left earlier in the car. My other phone got drawn in the water I guess.

 

“Hi mummy.”

 

“Megan? Are you fine? I’ve been trying reach your line for a while now.”

 

“I lost it mum.”

 

“What happened?”

 

“Forget about it mum.”

 

“Tell me already young man.”

 

“Fine. After our call earlier, I had a minor accident..”

 

“Accident?” She cut me off.

 

“Yes mum. I fell in the pool at a waterfall. I was saved by a lady but when I regained consciousness, I realized the girl together with her friends took after advantage of me.”

 

“What?”

 

“Yes mum. They made money out of me and I got one of them arrested.”

 

“You arrested them?”

 

“Yes mum only one.”

 

“And who was the one you arrested?”

 

“The one who saved me.”

 

“You’re a fool. Get her out now Megan.”

 

“But why mum?”

 

“I said get the girl out!”

 

“Alright mum.”
