‘It is actually very true Yolanta, you see the problem with loving so hard is you end up being clouded with your emotions that you can no longer see what is in front of you. I have loved Esther with everything in me, because I believe that is the best way to love.’ I said as the night breeze hit my face

She was quiet, I guess because the day had been rocky for all of us.

‘Wane is having an affair with Cornell.’ She said in a whisper

‘Wane your sister?’

‘Yes.’

I couldn’t help but laugh.

‘You find it funny huh?’

‘Forgive my humour but it is quite funny.’ I responded still laughing She stood up to leave but I was quick enough to block her way

‘I am sorry.’ I said trying so hard to stop laughing ‘Really?’ she asked rolling her eyes

Just that made me laugh some more and I swear she was about to slap me if I didn’t control myself.

‘Corny you find this funny right?’

‘Oh boy, you are upset.’ I said

‘I look like I am joking?’

‘Well because you never call me Corny.’ I told her

She moved back to her seat

‘Yolanta why exactly are you upset?’

‘I am not upset, I am hurt.’More interesting stories available on Topster Stories App

‘Hurt? Why?’

‘Have you forgotten that this is my ex we are talking about, and my sister for crying out loud.’

‘Forgive my being dumb but I thought you and Cornell are no longer together.’ ‘That doesn’t give her the right to have an affair with him.’

‘And it is okay for you to have an affair with your ex’s twin brother?’ I asked now looking into her eyes

‘This is different, this is not an affair.’

‘Tell me what exactly is happening between us.’

‘We kissed, a moment of weakness that’s it.’ She said firmly ‘Oh really, that is what you really think it was?’ ‘Come on Cornelius, you are engaged.’

‘Was engaged.’ I cut short

‘That doesn’t change anything, I am not that kind of girl.’ ‘What kind of girl Yolanta?’

‘The kind that will go wherever her emotions take her at that particular time, I am not moved with the current of the wind. I master seasons at heart so that I am not taken by surprise.’ She said with her head buried deep in her palms

‘So let me get this straight, you feel what happened between us was just a weakness? A moment of passion that wasn’t supposed to happen?

She kept quiet, daring not to look at me

‘You need to grow up Yolanta and trust me if I didn’t feel anything towards you I would have never come anywhere close to you.’ I said as I stood up to leave ‘So now you want to play victim, you want to make me the villain right?’ she asked as she stood up too

‘I am done talking to you.’ I said

‘Well guess what, I am not done. Because you know what, I have feelings. I have emotions.’ She yelled

‘I can see that.’ I said as I turned on my feet

‘Cornelius you will listen to me.’ She said as she ran in front of me blocking my way

‘Hurry, I am freezing out here.’ I said coldly

‘I am hurt that out of all the men that my sister could fall in love with it had to be my ex, I am hurt because I know Cornell will be a different man around her. I am

hurt because emotions are no one’s friends, here I am still nursing my wounds and hoping that just maybe things could get back to normal between us and there they are in each other’s arms.’

‘So you still have hope that things could get back to normal between you too?’ I asked her in disbelief

She kept quiet for a while.

‘Damn it Yolanta I asked you a question!’ ‘I don’t owe you any explanation.’ She said

‘You know what, you are one selfish person and I do hope your little sister ends up with Cornell.’ I said before walking off

I was really upset, for a minute I thought what I had shared with her was something special but I guess it’s not always that when we feel something for someone then the feeling must be mutual.

I kicked the door open and headed to the bar where I poured myself a glass of whisky.

‘Cheers.’ Cornell said

‘I didn’t see you there.’ I responded gulping the glass contents at once ‘Guess we still have the same taste in things.’ He said

I took some time to digest what he had said.

I poured myself another glass and settled on one of the bar stools facing the chandelier above.

‘We used to be the best of friends you know.’ Cornell said looking in my direction ‘Growing up happened, cheers to that.’ I said lifting my glass

Just then Kendra walked in with a box of cards.

‘I couldn’t sleep.’ She said

‘Makes the three of us.’ I and my brother responded at the same time

‘For old times’ sake.’ She said moving the table so that they could be enough room.

We all moved to the carpet and Cornell stashed the cards, it felt like old times. ‘We missed you.’ Kendra said when she stashed her cards down

‘Missed you too kiddo, I can see you are winning these games.’ Cornell said ‘Really guys what happened to us? We were supposed to be the three musketeers, we were supposed to be inseparable. What happened to that bond?’

We both kept quiet, not sure if answering her would do her any good. ‘Growing up happened little one.’ I finally said breaking the silence ‘Growing up sucks.’ She said reaching for my glass of whisky ‘You wouldn’t dare.’ I said staring at her then the glass

‘You know why I don’t want to grow up? Well because growing up makes people strangers. Growing up kills the little joy in the things one used to treasure, things like friendship, honesty, loyalty, love, relationships. You see when people grow up they just become entangled in their lives and their web of lies, they stop caring about other people’s feelings because they believe they are protecting their own hearts. They stop giving their all because they believe they have been hurt so bad that they can’t nurse their wounds any more, but what grownups forget is that despite all this they still need to be there for each other when need arises.’ She paused

‘You know we love each other right?’ Cornell asked ‘Love?’ she asked with a chuckle

‘It takes more than love, its sacrifice, knowing that someone is always there and that they always have your back. But the only thing you two have done over the years is grow more apart, I wish we could be like before. But the damage is too great.’ She said and stood up
