Pedro looked down at the wet grass between us. “I’m sorry, Rachel, I didn’t mean to…”

“It’s fine.” I said dismissively, trying to get my emotions back in check.

“Just know, this will only further complicate things for you upon your arrival there.”

“I know, and I don’t care.”

Pedro nodded his head. “Alright, I will let your handler know of the change.”

“My handler?” I asked annoyed.

Pedro smiled at my expression. “Yes, well, last time I was there to care for you, but this time I won’t be, so I have appointed a handler to you, but I think you’ll like her, and also, Patrick is under strict direction

to watch out for you, so if at any point you worry about who to trust, Patrick is always there for you.” He said seriously.

“Am I in danger even in the castle?” I asked softly.

Pedro sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly, then he nodded. “Yes,” He admitted. “There will be people who are out to destroy you for what they think you did, and then people who will seek to destroy you because of who you are, the life of a royal is always a dangerous one. There will always be people out to steal your power.”

“I don’t want any power.”

“I know.” He nodded, reaching out to tap me on the nose. “The plan is to get you out of it, alright? So try not to worry, just be careful, and know that whatever your feelings for Calvin, he will never let something happen to you under his watch. You have to know that much is true.”

I swallowed hard, images flashing into my mind that I’ve tried so hard to fight down. The dark castle, bodies, blood, and a handsome prince looming in the middle of it all, now a king, his eyes always on mine. I shook my head to get rid of the visons.

“All I want is for you to protect my little girl.” I nodded, watching as Logan pulled out a book from her bag and started reading it to her.

Pedro looked back to look at them too. “I will protect that child with my life, Rachel.” He said when he turned back to me. “We will call you when we make it to our destination, but it could be a few days, so don’t worry.” He said, placing a hand on my shoulder. He took an envelope from his pocket, passing it to me.

“This has all the flight information you’ll need. When you land in Ireland, a driver will be waiting for you, he’ll take you to the city, and your handler, Octavia, will be waiting there for you.”

I took the paper from him, then stepped forward wrapping my arms around Pedro’s neck. “Thank you.” I whispered.

“You know I’d do anything for you, silly girl.” He laughed lightly. “Take care of yourself, and I will take care of her.” He smiled at me when he pulled away, tapping my nose one more time before he went to the cab, climbing in on the other side and settling in beside Rose.

I took a deep breath before walking over to the cab too, putting my hand on Logan’s shoulder. He glanced back at me and put the book away. “Alright, Rosebud, I’ve got to go get my stuff, but you be good for Papa Pedro, alright? If I don’t get a good report, I can’t bring you back a surprise.” He winked at her.

“I’ll be super good.” She smiled at him.

He leaned in, kissing her forehead. “I love you, Rose.” He said.

“I love you too, daddy.” She smiled.

Logan leaned out of the car. “I’m going to get my things.” He whispered swiftly as he passed me, careful not to let Rose see the tears in his eyes.

I climbed into the car next. “Rose, I love you so much baby.” I told her.

“You and daddy are being so funny.” She said has she tapped her shoes together impatiently. “Don’t you want to go on your money moon?” She asked and I laughed. More interesting stories available

“Honey moon.” I smiled and corrected her.

“Oh, right.” She giggled.

I leaned in to hug her. “Yes, I do want to go, but I am just going to miss my little best friend.” I told her and she reached her arms around my neck too.

“I’ll miss you too.” She told me. “Love you, Momma.”

I leaned back so I could look her in the eyes. “I love you too. All the way to the sky, the moon, the stars, and the sun.”

“Sky, moon, stars, and sun.” She smiled back.

“Bye, baby.”

“Bye, Momma.” She grinned, then turned to look at Pedro, totally unaware the dangers that were all around her.

I glanced up at him and he smiled at me, nodding once.

I backed away, covering my mouth with my hand as I watched the cab back out of the driveway and disappear into the night.

Once it was out of sight, I let it all go.

The tears came pouring, and two big hands landed on my shoulders, spinning me around.

I clung to Logan, burying my head in his chest, letting him hold me together.

“She’s going to be ok.” He whispered to me. “We’re all going to be alright.”

“I hope you’re right.” I cried into his shirt.

He kissed my head, then took my hand, leading me to the other waiting cab.

I climbed in, and Logan went back to retrieve our two bags, then he was back at my side, pulling me to him and holding me as I cried.

“Driver, we’re ready.” Logan said.

The driver nodded, and I looked up into Logan’s eyes. “Are we?” I asked, the fear creeping up my spine.

“To the airport.” Logan said, then he smiled at me, being strong like I needed him to be. “Here we go.” He said to me as the car began to back out of the driveway and I watched my house get smaller and smaller.

“Goodbye.” I whispered to it, and my normal life.

Logan held my hand as we walked through the terminal stoically.

The last time I had been on a plane was after Calvin sent me away and back to my normal life without him. Now, I’m getting on a plane, going back to Ireland because Calvin has sent for me to return. I can’t lie to myself and pretend I hadn’t wondered about it before. I hadn’t really thought too far into it until earlier when I told Pedro I was angry that he never sent for me to come back after he found out about Rose. I’d never voiced that before, or even let myself think on it, but now that I have, it is true.

Pedro confirmed to me that he does in fact know about Rose.

Maybe not a lot about her, but he does at least know that she exists. If he cared, he would have come back for us, found a way to let me know that it was at least an option, but it wasn’t. I was never given anyway to contact him, or find him. I’d wanted to. As much as I didn’t want to think I did, I wanted to so badly. If he’d only given me a chance back then, we could have found a way to make it work, but he hadn’t. He sent me away without a second thought.

I shook my head as we boarded our plane, hating all of these stupid emotions that he was bringing up in me already and I’m not even in the same country as him yet, much less the same room. My heart pounds at the thought, and not a good heart pounding, more like a make your knees shake and you feel like you might vomit kind of heart pounding.

“Babe, you alright?” Logan asked cautiously as we took our seats.

I glanced over at him for only a second, knowing if I looked too long, he’d see how torn up I’m feeling. “I’m just…”

“Nervous?” He asked. “Or afraid?”

I turned away, looking out the window instead. “I guess both.”

“Of the whole situation in general, or about one person specifically?” I hated how perceptive he could be at times. “Do I need to be worried here, Rach?”

I turned back to him. “No, baby.” I said, squeezing his hand. “It’s just a lot for me to take in right now, and I’m sure it is to you too, I’m sorry I’m not being very supportive.”

Logan put his finger to my lips and shushed me quietly. “Don’t worry about me right now.” He whispered, putting his thumb under my chin and tilting my face back to kiss me softly. “I’m here for you, whatever you need.” He said, then he looked down slightly before looking back up under his long blonde eye lashes. “What happened between you and…I don’t even know his name.” He shook his head. “What are we going into?”

I sighed, leaning back into the chair. “It is a long story.”

“Good thing we have the whole long flight.”

I nodded my head, he obviously wasn’t going to let this go. I told him all about the day I was taken, my time at Drighten, and my being chosen for the competition, how I thought it was a horrible thing, until I came to find out I actually was lucky to have been chosen, or I would have died that first night.

He nodded along, but you could see it in his face how hard it was for him to take it all in. He drew his brows together, and huffed a few times, clearly finding parts to be unbelievable or downright awful.

“The competition was shorter lived than it was supposed to be.” I told him. “The prince’s name was Calvin, and he and I bonded quickly, enough that he didn’t want to continue with the competition when he knew he wanted to be with me.” I saw Logan roll his eyes at that, but I kept going. “It all happened so fast, we were…We got closer and closer until we were engaged, but there was danger, a rebellion started against Calvin and his father, and I thought that I was the reason, but I later found out it was all because of the vampire takeover that never happened.” I shook my head at how stupid I had been again, for probably the billionth time in my life. “We married in a hurry because he was going away to fight, and we were happy for a while, but all the lies he’d told made it complicated.” I admitted. “Eventually there was a huge crisis, and Calvin forced me to leave. He told me the truth about

everything and he sent me back to my mom. He did it all to protect me, but it still…It still hurt nonetheless.”

“You thought you were in love with him?” Logan asked.

I closed my eyes, seeing Calvin’s smoky blue eyes behind my eyelids were they usually were. “Yeah, I did.” I sighed. He started to open his mouth but I shook my head. “I’ll tell you everything else about where we are going and everything later, I’m really tired, and after saying goodbye to Rose, I just really want to take a nap and forget all of this for a while.”

He nodded his head. “Of course, baby.” He said, kissing the side of my head.
