PART 9

 

By the time we woke up, Skyla had left for school and I was surprised that Tess doesn’t drop her. She said Skyla is a big girl and should get used to doing things for herself, furthermore the school has transport. While preparing for work, she kept asking me if it is rue Raksha did what she did to her real mother. I told her I wasn’t there, but people talk and the truth always come out even if it is hidden.

 

TESS: So I have been raised by a woman who killed both my parents. Isn’t this world a weird place to live in?

 

JADE: But she brought you up well, plus taking you to very good schools.

 

TESS: I know and I appreciate that, but that doesn’t make her a saint.

 

JADE: Very weird, but if we dwell on search things we can’t move on. Let’s execute the revenge and let them be. In fact before we execute this thing, I have a confession to make.

 

TESS: Don’t tell me you slept with my mother!

 

JADE: Damn! I am not that hungry, but I did it with someone else.

 

TESS: I knew it? The glow and excitement has sold you out. Do you know how confusing it is when you make love to someone after a long break? You feel like a new born baby and when you have money you can buy lunch for everyone you find in a restaurant. It is so nourishing.

 

JADE: And especially when your partner is in it full and is an animal in bed.

 

TESS: Fill me in coz I am sure it is not Tyson.

 

JADE: Tyson? Never ever! You know what the headlines would read? “A SHORT AND BALD BOSS DIED ON TOP OF HIS YOUNG AND HYPER EMPLOYEE”

 

 

TESS: Or, “A 60 year old man died due to over speeding in bed while driving a new car”

 

JADE: That would be crazy. You remember the guy you so me with in the club?

 

TESS: Yes the juicy one. I had to look at him many times to believe that is he truly a human being. You banged him?

 

JADE: Twice. After that kiss I couldn’t just let go.

 

TESS: Is he the new kid on the block.

 

JADE: He is an old client. In fact he already left town. He bought a V8 and I got some very good commission from that.

 

I filled her in on the exact figure and what Travis sent to me thereafter. She was happy for me and encouraged me to invest wisely. I loved Tess because she always sent customers my way and asked for nothing in return. I couldn’t just let Ryan ruin our friendship. I was so happy we were back on track and planning on how to hit the double R together.

 

TESS: I don’t understand how you can sleep with such a hunk and let go. I would have bought a chain and tied him to the bed post.

 

JADE: You can’t cage a crow. But if he loves you and what you do, he will come back. I am sure Travis and I will build a life together. I didn’t want to say anything to him, but trust me, I felt him to my bone marrow. He will be back and I will swear my love to him.

 

TESS: And if he says he doesn’t love you the same way?

 

JADE: I will set him free and let my heart continue pumping blood.

 

TESS: Why not have a child with him?

 

JADE: By the way. What if he thinks it’s a trap?

 

 

TESS: Do you care? Give birth and have that sweet baby to yourself.

 

JADE: Let me think about it, diapers ain’t my thing you know!

 

TESS: You will cross that bridge soon. So what’s the plan? I have three days to give Ryan the cheque. Meanwhile as from today I am in my red days, no sex.

 

JADE: Today is Friday, so you have until Tuesday. Weekend is not counted. Can I call your mum and hang out with her tomorrow evening?

 

TESS: Do what you have to do and get me answers. Meanwhile I will avoid Ryan as much as I can. Tomorrow while you are confusing my mum, I will be massaging my side hustle in a beach Hotel.

 

JADE: I pity that man.

 

I went to work a jovial woman. Tyson always noticed any simple change in my mood. He knows when I am broke, when I am horny and when I don’t feel like working. He summoned me to his office at around 10am. I was like his PA because he checked with me before doing any sales and he trusted me with his deals. At one time he told me he forgot and called his wife, Jade, he slept hungry that night and it was back to back on bed. He was like a father, an uncle or a big brother. I shared so much with him and him with me. He told me to sit and I knew something was wrong. He wasn’t smiling at all. My heart missed a beat. I was so happy and didn’t want anything to go wrong. He kept quiet for one full minute looking at his phone. So many things crossed my mind. Did Cameron call him regarding the accident? Was it about Travis or he wanted the commission back because the percentage was high. I couldn’t wait, his silence was killing me, and anxiety was building up like no one’s business.

 

JADE: Sir why am I here? You called me and you seem lost.

 

TYSON: When will you learn to be patient? There is a call I am waiting for then I can speak to you.

 

 

His tone was scary. He had never spoken to me that way ever. I wanted to storm out and go have peace in my own office. I was about to stand when his phone rang. He wasn’t listening and only responding with, yes and okay. What the hell was going on? I started thinking of anything I had done wrong in the past week. All I could think of was sleeping with Travis and him sending me cash. But that was appreciation for my super night services. I killed Tyson ten times in my head coz of keeping me in suspense. My heart wasn’t pleased, my tongue dried, and my feet became numb. He finally hung up and gave me a witchy look.

 

TYSON: Jade, I have worked with you here for a number of years. You have been my most trusted employee. You have brought in a number of businesses without expecting anything in return except your salary.

 

JADE: Sir, what’s the problem? Just say it so that I can defend myself.

 

TYSON: What you did with Travis is none of my business and because of that…..

 

I saw a thin smile on his face and slanted my head a little bit towards him.

 

JADE: Eh he, I thought that was personal, and it is not like I slept with him in the office. It was outside work place.

 

TYSON: Can you just shut up I finish what I am saying before you conclude whether what you did was right or wrong? You are such a talker.

 

JADE: Okay talk, you don’t have to be mean about my talking.

 

TYSON: Now, because of your good services in and out of the office…..

 

JADE: Really? Must you include out of the office?

 

TYSON: Sorry, good services in the office, Travis is buying another car for his father he has recommended our company to two of his acquaintances who are ready to buy.

 

JADE: Sir, with all due respect, is that the way you pass on good news? I almost died right here in front of you due to anxiety! I hate you so much.

 

 

TYSON: And I love you so much my dear girl. Next week will be a busy week for us. They are emailing the details and then we see what we have in stock, or if we don’t have, you know which showroom to visit and make a deal.

 

JADE: One question.

 

TYSON: Yes, he will be coming over too, be ready for marathon nights.

 

JADE: You know me so well sir. I have to resign.

 

That caught him off guard and we laughed about it. The working environment Tyson created for me was one of a kind. I never hated going to that office. He always made sure I was happy no matter what I was going through. Other employees envied me, some even thought we had a thing going on, but I didn’t care. I briefed him about my meeting with Tess and how we planned to put Ryan and Raksha in place. He was excited and wanted to be part of them game. I told him he was too old to gamble with people’s feelings. He told me to be careful, though Ryan wasn’t known to be violent, but he could get bitter for losing the money which he was actually diverting to Raksha. From his office I went to mine and rang Tess. I gave her the good news, that my new catch was coming back to town and he was bringing two other potential baes. From work that evening, I went home straight. Tess was going shopping and I told her to go with Skyla since I had some paperwork to deal with at home. When I was just about to enter the gate I heard someone hooting. I ignored the first hoot, then the second one which was louder made me look back. My heart stopped, from the lowered window I could see who it was! What was he doing coming to my house? I thought of calling Tess first before going to him, but I changed my mind. I was going to deal with him fair and square. I knew what he wanted to tell me, but I wasn’t going to give him room. I slowly walked back to where he had parked. He got out of the car and came towards me. He said hello and I just looked at him. I didn’t respond to his greetings.

 

 

RYAN: Look Jade, stop coming between me and Tess. She loves me and nothing you do will separate us.

 

I had to be careful not to let the cat out of the basket. I knew he was going to push me to the edge, but I knew better. So I had to remain humble and very polite, something I had to force for Tess sake, otherwise he would have known that mad women do exist.

 

JADE: Does Tess know that you are here and that you want to cheat on her with me? If she loves you then go to her, don’t come to me.

 

RYAN: I am here to warn you.

 

JADE: Warn me about what? I am not a man and Tess is just a good friend. You are the one who can’t separate us. We share a bond that no one can break.

 

RYAN: Don’t underestimate me you woman.

 

JADE: Look Ryan, your warning has been noted. Tess is yours till death do you part. I am not your competition; I am a woman and a friend.

 

RYAN: You are a jealous friend and I am glad she already knows that.

 

JADE: Good, now get the hell out of my face.

 

RYAN: By the way, I know you intentionally detained her last night so that we don’t meet. But it was for the best because that delay has increased our business value.

 

JADE: In as much as I don’t know what you are talking about, and I don’t care, good for you man. Good for you. It is nice to be loved.

 

He had no idea that the cheque he was to be given was dancing hip hop in my handbag. He went back to the car and drove off as I watched with a wide smile. I went into my apartment and told Tess about Ryan coming around. I didn’t want him to call her first and lie that I’d asked him to visit me and probably plant

 

 

another stupid kiss on my dry lips. Tess laughed and asked me why I didn’t shoot him.

 

The next morning at around 11am, just after Tess rang me and told me that she was off to meet her boss in their usual jungle, I rang Raksha and asked her what plans she had for the evening.

 

RAKSHA: Coming from you, there must be a problem.

 

JADE: Not really, but I just want to hang out and chat.

 

RAKSHA: Tess told me you broke up?

 

JADE: Were we in a relationship?

 

RAKSHA: Stop twisting my English, you know what I mean.

 

JADE: She found a man and ditched me. I don’t blame her, sex is more important than friendship, yah?

 

RAKSHA: That you have to ask her not me.

 

JADE: We hardly talk nowadays. So are we on or not?

 

RAKSHA: I will give you three hours only, 8-10pm. I have a date after 10pm.

 

JADE: You will have to chase me away with a machete because I would love to see that lucky man.

 

RAKSHA: His name is private and confidential

 

JADE: What a beautiful name he has. I will be there at 8pm

 

I was at Raksha’s at 8:05 pm. I had bought a bottle of whisky and some Ketamine drug to spice her drink so that she could lose a bit of memory and talk more. Tess and I had been told about it by some dude we hang out with some months back. He actually had a bottle that he used once in a while on girls. We knew it was bad and

 

 

so Tess stole it from him as we were leaving. I had kept it for future use and future had come in form of Raksha.

 

We never used it, but I intended to use it on Raksha so that she could talk like a parrot.

 

She had cooked and so we dined before we started drinking and chatting. I spiked her drink just a little to make her hyper. The topic automatically shifted to Tess so fast. The drink was sinking in but her sanity remained intact.

 

RAKSHA: So, what happened between you and my girl.

 

JADE: She didn’t tell you?

 

RAKSHA: Just that you tried to seduce her man.

 

JADE: And you believed her?

 

RAKSHA: Never!

 

JADE: Why? She is your daughter.

 

RAKSHA: I don’t have to believe everything she says coz she is my daughter. She is in love and she can say anything to protect her stupid relationship. Tess is irresponsible; do you know where she goes every other weekend like this one?

 

JADE: I thought they go for seminars. I mean work related get together kind of thing!

 

RAKSHA: Nonsense, she goes for escapades with different men and that is why she leaves her daughter here with me.

 

JADE: I thought Ryan is her man. What is really going on?

 

RAKSHA: Tess is very stupid and she will soon get what’s coming to her.

 

 

JADE: You should sit her down and tell her how you feel, she is your daughter and as a mother you should guide her.

 

RAKSHA: I am not her……..

 

She stopped. She realized she was going to say something wrong. I already knew what it was and I didn’t want to push her. I tried to be calm as she kept asking me to refill her glass. I had become her waitress. I told her to play some good music so that she could teach me more dance moves like last time. She reminded me that my time was limited because she was expecting a special guest.

 

JADE: I need to see this mystery man of yours.

 

RAKSHA: So that you snatch him like you tried to snatch Ryan from Tess

 

JADE: Ha ha ha…. I am not interested, but I wouldn’t mind having a glimpse of

Her phone rung, it was lying on the coffee table. She told me to get it for her. It was just a number and I registered it my mind. I pretended to go to the toilet as she spoke on the phone. I saved the number. I needed to know if he was the mystery man. After saving it, I texted the same number to Tess to ask her if she knew it, shock of all shockers, it was Ryan’s and she thought he had called me and I didn’t answer. I told her to chill as I was still gathering information. Things were falling in line. I went back to the living room and Raksha wasn’t there. I spiked her drink a little more. She came back and reminded me that we only had 30 minutes and then I can leave.

 

JADE: Anyway I have enjoyed spending time with you. You are like my mum you know.

 

RAKSHA: I also wish I had a daughter. Too bad, I have never been to a labour ward.

 

That was it. She had no child. She didn’t realize that she had missed to say “a daughter LIKE you”. That was confirmed. Tess was not her child. She had never given birth. The labour ward part betrayed her fully. Thirty minutes flew by as

 

 

we talked crap. My phone was recording everything. The drug was too much for her and 10 minutes to my checking out she passed out on the couch. I couldn’t leave her in such a state. I had to wait for the mystery man to come and then I go. At least she would have someone watching over her. I called my Taxi guy and told him to start coming so that when I walk out, he is at the gate. 10.05pm and the door-bell rang. I was as excited as a virgin being taken to the “theatre” room for the first time. I rushed to the door with my handbag already under my arms. I flung the door open and outside stood the mystery man looking all dolled up for a night with Raksha. I dashed out and ran to the Taxi without even a word of hello to RYAN.
