I was fuming and I needed to talk to someone otherwise I would burst with anger. I got my phone and dialled Wane’s line.

‘Baby.’ I said when she picked up

‘Yoyo do you know what time it is?’ she asked in a sleepy voice ‘We need to talk right now.’ I said the anger almost pouring ‘Give me a minute.’ She said before the line went quiet ‘Hello.’ She said again after a minute

‘His arrogant, his full of himself. He thinks he knows it all, he had the guts to question my private life.’ I screamed

‘And as if that is not enough, he came to my room to call me selfish.’ I said again without swallowing

‘Yolanta please breath.’ She said slowly now fully awake

‘I can’t breathe, what sort of a grown up plays music so loud, what sort of a man doesn’t know how to mind his own business.’ I said again ‘Yolanta!’ she screamed

‘Yes.’ I responded as calmly as possible

‘Who is this guy?’ she asked

‘Cornelius or something.’ I responded

‘Does he write?’ she asked

‘I don’t know but he is arrogant.’ I responded recalling how my day had been ‘And he is the reason you are up at 3 in the morning?’ she asked ‘I can’t sleep, I am anxious about the results.’ I told her

‘Don’t worry too much, you put your very best in that story, besides you have a family that loves you.’ She told me

‘Talking about family, how is Uncle George?’ I asked her

‘He is fine, we went to visit mum’s grave and aunty Kangwa’s grave yesterday.’ She said with a sting of pain

‘How did it go?’

‘Well it’s high time I forgave her, I can’t hold on to the pain.’ She said ‘And Uncle Kaluba?’ I asked

‘Boy does that man age like fine wine’. She said before laughing ‘You do know he is old enough to be your father right?’ I asked her

‘That is the whole point, he is so understanding. He is fine, keeps fit in the gym and most times I just get lost in his presence.’ She said

‘Gross Wane, he is your dad’s best friend and his old.’ I exclaimed before laughing ‘Wait is it wrong for me to admire perfect creation?’ she asked

‘You get me worried little one, I do hope you don’t get married to an old man.’ I said before laughing

‘I am an old soul Yoyo, I wouldn’t blame myself if I got married to Uncle Kaluba.’ We both laughed after that

‘Tell me about this mystery man, how he looks like?’ ‘He is okay.’ I responded

‘Okay is not good enough, I want me some music to my ears.’ She said

‘He is good looking and he knows it, can you believe he opened his door without his shirt.’ I said recalling the scene

‘I do hope you didn’t get lost in his body.’ ‘Actually I did.’ I said shyly ‘You are such a nerd Yolanta.’

‘What, the man is good looking.’ I said defensively ‘I bet not as hot as my sugar boo Kaluba.’ She said

‘Wane you need to stop fantasizing about that man, seriously you need to stop.’ I told her

‘But I can still keep him as my wall paper right?’ she asked

I couldn’t help but laugh.

‘I miss you little one.’

‘I miss you too nerd.’ She said

I couldn’t help but laugh as I held my phone tightly to my ears.

‘I haven’t heard from Cornell.’ I told her

‘And?’ she asked

‘What do you mean and?’ I asked her back

‘Yoyo if you don’t call him, he won’t call you. If you don’t get in touch he doesn’t. So why exactly are you surprised?’ she asked ‘Maybe it’s high time I give him the’

She cut me short before I could even finish my sentence

‘We have come too far, good men have left us. We are not opening the cookie jar before the wedding night, not now; not ever.’ She said sternly ‘Maybe that is why he treats me the way he does.’ I told her

‘He can leave if he wants to, we won’t lower our standards just so we can keep a man. He needs to climb the ladder to reach to where you are, you don’t remove jewels just so it can be easy for him to carry.’ She said ‘I guess you are right.’ I said

‘That is why I need me some Kaluba loving, I bet he could never ask me for more than I can give.’

‘Wane I think you need to sleep.’ I said

‘You woke me up and now you want me to sleep?’ she asked

‘Well I have news for you pretty one, you and I will talk until the time you have to prepare for the awards.’ She said

We talked for the next hours about absolutely nothing, it felt just like home talking to her like that.

At five she allowed me to rest because the awards were going to be at 09 and I planned on getting on the next plane afterwards. ***

For the hundredth time I tried calling Esther but her line was either engaged or she would cut my call.

I could feel the anger building up, what had I not done for this woman. We had been together for years, I had the chance of cheating on her a million times but I chose to be faithful. She pushed me into engaging her even when I knew she wasn’t ready for marriage, in a few months we would be married and this her behaviour was getting to me.

‘I never stressed your father so much.’ Mum said settling into an arm chair ‘Mum times are different.’ I said flatly

‘But love remains the same you know.’ She said with emphasis ‘Do you plan on staying back after the awards?’ she asked me ‘I need to see her before the party.’

‘I will never forgive you if you mess up my anniversary, just so you know I am a lady who loves special occasions and I treat them as such.’

I wish I could have what my parents had.

‘We better get going before we run late.’ I told her

We got out of the hotel room and headed for the elevator. I was about to hit the ground floor button when the minion came running.

‘My morning couldn’t be better.’ I said

She didn’t bother to look at me but fixed her eyes on mum.

‘Mrs Kazadi.’ She said

‘Yolanta how are you.’ She said as they embraced.

‘It’s good to see you ma’am.’ She sad casually

‘Same here, oh my; meet my eldest son Cornelius.’ She said pointing at me She didn’t bother to look at me again

‘I didn’t think I would ever see you again.’ Mum told her ‘Neither did I.’ the minion responded
