I Will Wait – Episode 23

‘What did you do to her?’ Wane asked with tears falling from her eyes
Our attention shifted and we all turned to look at her
‘I didn’t do anything to her.’ I said seeing that everyone was waiting for me to respond
‘You are lying, how did you know that she was at the pond?’
‘Wane we had an argument earlier on but trust me I would never do anything to hurt your sister.’
‘You hurt her, you pushed her into the pond.’ She said bitterly
‘Wane stop it.’ Cornell said holding her
‘Let me go, I know what this is. So you two lured her and now you want to take her life.’ She said
‘Wait Wane, what are you talking about?’ Dad asked
‘I found Corny and Yoyo kissing yesterday, your sons wanted to use my sister. And I was foolish enough to think that Cornell here wanted something with me.’ She said as she sat down next to her sister, whose body was getting a little warm.
‘Is it true?’ dad asked looking in my direction
‘This is not the time.’ Mum said
‘Cornelius Kazadi, is it true?’
‘Yes dad.’
Dad slumped into his chair and buried his head in his hands.
‘I have failed as a father.’ He quietly said
Our attention was drawn to Yolanta when she coughed
‘Baby.’ I said moving to where she was
I knelt just next to her lifting her upper body so that she could cough some more.
‘You scared me.’ I quietly said not realizing how afraid I had been
‘Dad.’ She whispered slowly
‘What?’ I asked her
She turned her head and faced Wane who was still in tears.
‘You knew about Dad’s tumour?’
Wane faced down
‘Yolanta I need to make sure that you are okay first.’ Mum said handing her a cup of hot tea
‘How long have you known Wane?’ she asked ignoring mum’s sentiments
‘Two years now.’
‘You knew that my father was dying and for two years you kept it from me?’ she asked now tears falling from her eyes.
‘Wane how could you? I have loved you with everything in me and this is what you had to do to me?’ she asked
There was silence in the room, none of us sure of what to say.
‘Can you drive me to Lusaka?’ she asked me
‘Yoyo it is too dangerous, we have to wait for morning.’ I said calmly
‘My father is dying, if you can’t drive me. I will go by myself.’ She said trying to stand up but she was too weak
‘I will drive you myself, we will be out of here at 06am in the morning.’ Dad said
We all turned to look at him.
‘You have done enough damage, all of you.’ He said as he stood up to leave
‘Sleep with her, she is too emotional.’ He said looking at mum then at Yolanta
They stood up and she led her to Cornell’s room, Wane looked really broken and I didn’t know how to comfort her.
‘So you are here breaking up with me when we are the same?’ Esther asked
‘Shut up!’ both I and Cornell shouted at the same time
‘How bad is it?’ Cornell asked Wane
‘Very bad.’
‘But why didn’t you say something? To her?’ I asked
‘Yoyo’s life revolves around dads, if she had heard she would have put her life on a stand still just so she can care for him. He didn’t want that,’
‘He has been denying her the chance to let go, to say good bye.’
‘We told him the same thing but he is stubborn, just like her.’
‘One time he had fallen sick, she stopped living her life and somehow she too got sick. He healed but it took time for her to heal, the doctors advised that he must stay as strong as possible around her.’ She continued
‘That is sad.’ Kendra said
‘Yoyo and her dad were abandoned by her mother when she was days old, he had fallen in love with my mother but she loved dad too much. When she died my father gave her dad custody of me because at the time he was not quite the father figure. For a long time they had each other hence he wanted to hide this from her.’
‘Wait, I dated her two years and yet I didn’t know that you guys are not even siblings?’ Cornell asked
‘Trust me family is deeper than blood.’ She responded as she got up
‘As we speak dad is in hospital, I hear Yoyo’s mum is also dying and she is back to say goodbye to her daughter.’
‘This is messed up.’ Kendra said
‘My sister needs you more than ever.’ She said looking at me
‘And I won’t leave your side.’ Cornell told her
‘I think for now it is best that we stay away from each other until this whole thing settles.’
‘I can’t do that.’
‘You must and you will.’
