I Will Wait – Episode 18
_18_
I watched Esther leave the room in triumph, somehow she had managed to ruin my life in the blink of an eye. Had I controlled my infidelity issues all this wouldn’t have happened. I sat on the bed looking back to the many times I had cheated on Yolanta, I really wanted to make things right but how was I going to do that when I was developing feelings for Wane and I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to fight them.
Kendra came to announce that dinner was ready and somehow something in her voice didn’t sound just right, I had promised myself that for once in my life I wasn’t going to let my parents down by causing drama this weekend but this was the second day and things didn’t look so bright.
‘Where is Yolanta?’ dad asked after searching through the room ‘She will join us shortly.’ I responded without even thinking twice
There was silence at the table, nobody said a thing. It’s like we were all lost in our own world.
‘Sorry for keeping you waiting.’ Yolanta said when she settled next to me ‘We were about to skip dinner because of your absence.’ Dad said with a smile Trust him to show humour even in awkward situations.
Mum said grace and we all dished up, nobody talking to the other. ‘Did I miss something?’ dad asked when dessert was served ‘Nothing my dear, I guess the kids are just tired.’ Mum responded
I could see that she was trying to cover up something, more like she knew what was happening.
‘Actually you missed a lot.’ Kendra said
We all turned in her direction except Yolanta who didn’t seem moved with Kendra’s remark
‘Princess don’t do this.’ Corny said putting his dessert bowl down
‘Don’t do what Cornelius? The problem with this house is that you are all full of secrets. Now I see why Cornell left in the first place.’ She said as she stood up to leave
‘Kendra get back here.’ Mum ordered
‘As if that will make me stay.’ She responded rolling her eyes ‘Kendra come here!’ Dad said more fiercely
She turned at once and settled back into her chair
‘You see what I mean when I say you spoilt this kid rotten?’ he asked looking at mum angrily
‘Let us not get to that.’ She responded
‘No I will get to it, this child is turning twenty and yet behaves like a sixteen year old. Look at the way she dresses in my presence, leaving her thighs like that. The last time I checked she doesn’t even know anything about tradition.’
With those words mum removed her wrapper and handed it to Kendra who reluctantly got it.
‘No matter how much she covers up, her morals her already rotten.’ Dad spat There was silence again in the room
‘What is it you know that made you ruin dinner?’ he asked her calmly
Kendra couldn’t respond, her eyes focused on her fingers which she kept playing with.
‘Young lady I will not repeat myself.’ He said
‘I think Yolanta is cheating on Cornell.’ She responded
I turned to look at Yolanta who had her eyes fixed on nothing in particular ‘What did you just say?’ dad asked
‘I found her talking to Cornelius in an inappropriate way.’
‘And you drew the conclusion that she is cheating on Cornell with Corny?’ he asked
Kendra was quite.
‘What if Corny is the one after her, pardon the question Esther.’ She was quite again.
‘I didn’t think of that.’ She said lightly
‘So you just looked at one side of the coin and came up with your own conclusions?’
‘Well I like what Corny and Esther have and I wouldn’t want to see anyone or anything come between them.’
‘Kendra someday you will have what they have, until then it is not in your place to
try and dictate their relationship or chase any Jim or Jane that comes in their way.
It is not your place.’
‘But dad.’
‘No buts Kendra, apologise to Yolanta.’
We all looked up to face her.
‘I am sorry.’ She said
Yolanta just nodded her head.
‘You and Wane go to bed, I need to talk to these four.’
The girls stood up and somehow I felt pity that Kendra had been treated like that by dad because I knew that she had a soft spot for Corny, my concern was to know what exactly Yoyo was talking about with him.
‘You almost skipped dinner.’ Dad said looking in Yolanta’s direction ‘No sir, I just delayed.’
‘Young lady do not lie to me under my roof, let’s try that again. You almost skipped dinner.’
‘Yes sir I did.’ She responded allowing the tears to flow freely ‘What have you done this time?’ dad asked me furiously ‘Dad does it always have to be about me?’ I asked angrily
‘I knew something was up, I knew this is just a façade you were putting up!’ ‘I did not do anything.’
‘Then why is she crying, you obviously did something wrong. You obviously hurt her. Cornell you are the black sheep amongst my children, you are so different from Cornelius.’
‘Don’t say that, they might not be the same but they have some good in them.’ Mum defended
‘Shut up woman, you always insisted on giving him everything that he wanted, allowing him to go to Lusaka and how many reports have we heard about his doings? How many times did I have to pull strings just for him not to go to prison? How many times have I had sleepless nights just so I comfort your broken heart? A heart broken by your ungrateful son?
‘I am a mother and no matter how bad a child is I still love them that is what makes me a woman.’
‘He is a spoilt child and had I disciplined him all this wouldn’t have happened.’ ‘So you think Cornelius is the better child?’ I asked with tears freely falling
‘I do not think, I know so. Because times without number he has proven that.’ ‘If you think your son is perfect, well guess what. Your son is marrying a whore, your son is marrying someone who thinks he is not man enough. You want to know how I know.’
‘Cornell stop it.’ Mum pleaded
‘Well because I slept with her, and guess what? I loved it, every part of it especially knowing that she is engaged to him because I beat him this time!’
