I Will Wait – Episode 13
_13_
I don’t know how mum knew Yolanta but the look on my brother’s face and hers were enough to get me suspicious. I pulled her closer by holding her waist and started moving to where my parents were. I noticed the two didn’t stop looking at each other making it a little weird for all of us, standing next to my brother was his fiancé; the woman I had slept with weeks ago. And on the far end was my father, the man that never saw good in anything I did and if I didn’t know better I would think that he had made it his personal mission to brush it in my face every chance he got that I was not the ideal kind of child.
‘Mum.’ I said with a smile that didn’t reach my eyes
‘My baby.’ She responded pulling me in an embrace like I was still a little boy The embrace reminded me of the good that was still in the world, it reminded me that there was still a woman who loved me despite my way of living.
‘Sorry meet my lady Yolanta.’ I said pulling away from the embrace ‘Chabala Yolanta, who would have thought?’ she asked as she hugged her ‘How are you ma’am?’ Yoyo greeted ‘Brother.’ I said looking at Cornelius
‘I see you found yourself one of those Lusaka girls.’ He said rudely looking at Yoyo
We all stared back at him, no one saying a word which made him a little embarrassed
‘Hey son.’ Dad greeted breaking the silence
‘Hai dad.’ I greeted back my hands tightly holding Yolanta ‘How are you Sir?’ she greeted him
‘I am good dear how are you?’ he greeted back
The house helps came and took our bags inside whilst we were led to the garden where some chairs had been laid out.
Kendra and Wane were busy making conversation, actually they were the only ones talking because we had all wondered off in our own worlds.
‘Seems you two have been acquainted.’ Dad said looking at the two girls
‘It’s actually nice to meet someone I can hold a conversation with, well someone of my age.’ Wane said causing us to laugh
She was such a joy.
‘You girls can go inside.’ Mum told them
‘Your young sister?’ mum asked Yolanta
‘Yes ma’am.’
‘I can see you are always this reserved.’ She told her
‘Is this the girl you were talking about?’ dad asked looking at mum ‘Yes she is.’ She responded with a smile

I was fuming under my breath, truth be told I hated this Yolanta girl because she looked perfect. I noticed how my fiancé was looking at her and I wanted for him to look at me that way too. Here was Cornell, the man I had slept with some weeks back; he had not even looked at me twice and I was feeling really stupid. By the end of this weekend I was going to make sure hell broke loose.
‘So Yolanta, since we are dating brothers I guess its automatic that we become
friends right?’
‘No.’ she responded
‘Sorry I mean, friendship runs deeper than that.’ She quickly corrected when everyone looked at her
‘What nerve that she had, she thought she could out play me.’ I thought to myself ***
There was something about Cornelius’ girlfriend that I didn’t like one bit, she was full of herself and had this venom every time that she spoke.
‘So how long have you guys been together?’ I asked the Kazadis ‘It’s our 49th anniversary.’ They responded uniformly
They turned to face each other and they both smiled. ‘How do you do that?’ I asked admiring them ‘What?’ Mrs Kazadi asked
‘How do you manage to stay this happy even after 49 years of marriage?’ I asked as one of the house helps poured us some juice
‘Well marriage is not a bed of roses but you need to know that friendship is the key to any relationship.’ She said with a smile ‘That my dear is true.’ Mr Kazadi said
‘How long have you been together?’ Cornelius asked
I chose not to respond because I knew whatever I said would be an opportunity for him to say something about me.
‘A year.’ Cornell responded squeezing my hand
‘Seems that is the only lasting thing in your life.’ He said pointing at me
My anger was getting the best of me but I promised myself I wasn’t going to allow
it to ruin this couple’s anniversary.
‘Meaning?’ his brother asked him
‘Well whatever you touch evaporates, I wonder what hell you have made this girl go through or maybe you two are just the same.’
‘Baby can you show me to my room?’ I asked looking at Cornell
‘Actually we did not prepare a room for you.’ The hot headed Cornelius said again ‘Actually why don’t you share a room with Cornell?’ his mother asked
‘No ma’am, we don’t spend nights together.’ I answered as respective as possible ‘We finally have some decency in this house.’ His father said before gulping down his juice
‘Just because they don’t share a room doesn’t mean they are saints.’ Esther said I looked at her then at Cornelius, I needed serious grace if I was going to last another day in this house.
‘Cornelius why don’t you show her to your brothers room whilst we talk to him?’ his mother asked
‘I am coming toO.’ Esther said
‘We need to talk to you too.’ His father responded
I excused myself and followed Cornelius’ lead. We were quiet most of the time the only sounds were that of the fresh grass we were stepping on.
‘So you are actually after his money right?’ he asked breaking the silence ‘Excuse me?’ I asked taking offence
‘You heard me, my brother is not at all one for keeping relationships and seeing that you lasted a year only means two things.’ ‘Which are?’
‘Either you are after his money or just a whore.’
I don’t know where I got the strength but I slapped him hard against the face. ‘Now listen to me and listen real well, you know nothing about me or my relationship to your brother so I would suggest you stay out of it. And let me make it clear that I don’t want you near me or my sister this weekend.’ I said before walking off to the nearby room that I saw
I pushed the door open and found Wane with Kendra and another man probably in his late or early thirties.
‘Are you okay?’ Wane quickly asked
‘That good for nothing Cornelius thinks he can just talk to me the way he likes, God I hate him!’ I screamed not minding that his sister was present
‘He can be a hard nut to crack but hate is a strong word.’ The gentleman said
‘True.’ Kendra responded
‘And who are you?’ I asked
‘Oh forgive me my lady, I am Sean.’ He said with a smile
***
I walked to the room and the image I saw made me burn with fury, my best friend was smiling at the minion. I could see he was mesmerized by her
‘Dude that is my brother’s woman.’ I said with anger
‘Seems the Kazadi’s don’t know how to treat woman.’ Wane spoke out with Kendra agreeing
‘Sean can you direct me to Cornell’s room.’
‘You will not disrespect my brother in his father’s house.’ An angry Cornelius said ‘Really? Who exactly am I disrespecting here?’ I asked as I walked off in his face, my behind touching him accidentally.
