The sight that I came face to face with when I entered Azure’s room was enough to make the strongest men weak; she was there laying on the cold tiles with only her head lamp lit. Her phone was also just next to where her head was, her white bed sheets stained in blood.

Without wasting much time I carried her to the car and drove her to Magnum Clinic in Northmead. I was driving like a mad person that I was there in a few minutes.More interesting stories on Topster Stories App

They were nurses outside who had a stretcher, I carried her and put her there then helped with wheeling her inside.

They took her to the theatre and I was asked to wait outside. I couldn’t just stay put, I was in my own world anxiously waiting for the doctor to come out so that he could at least tell me that both Azure and my child were okay. I know I had not taken time to process everything but that was my child and I was already beginning to take a liking to it.

I looked at the watch and it was already thirty minutes past three in the morning,

they had been in theatre the past hour and with each passing minute I kept feeling

like my world was crumbling down.

I walked to the reception.

‘Excuse me, can I at least have information on what is happening?’ I asked the receptionist

‘I am sorry Sir but none of the people that have gone in there have come out, so we don’t know what is happening. All we can do is pray that everything goes well.’ She responded then went back to pressing her phone

I felt my heart grow cold as she laughed at whatever it is she was looking at, I mean who could be this mean? Here I was in desperation thinking of my unborn child and Azure and she was quick enough to go back to whatever she was doing. I knew standing there another minute would just make me do something I would later regret so I decided it was best to go back to the waiting lounge.

I sat on the cold rack chair and fell asleep in no time, someone patting me on the shoulder is what woke me up.

‘Mr. Mtonga.’ The man who I believed was the doctor called waking me up

‘Yes Doctor.’ I said stretching myself as I got up ‘How is she? How are they?’ I asked

He looked at me weary

‘Is everything okay?’ I asked worriedly

‘I need to speak to the both of you but right now she is resting, so I would suggest you go home and get some sleep; once she is awake, we will call you.’ He said

I looked at him unbelievably, I mean who could stay calm and try to get some rest in such a situation.

‘Doctor tell me she is fine.’ I said sternly

‘She will be fine.’ He said

‘Please go home and try to get some rest.’

I watched him walk away, I felt powerless because there was nothing I could do. Even if I stayed back and waited, they wouldn’t give me any news because according to them I needed to rest.

Instead of driving home, I drove to Azure’s place. The place felt strange without her, I removed my shirt remaining only with my trousers and vest that was under the shirt.

I got the stained bed sheets and placed them in the bathtub, I poured in some jik and added some boom paste.

I left them to soak, they were clean beddings in the wardrop so I got them and made her bed. Afterwards I cleaned the bedroom and cleaned the house then went to wash the bed sheets which had luckily washed off of all the blood except they were not as white as they were before. I would have burnt them but I thought it was up to her. After that I cleaned the tub and took a bath in the shower. When I was done, I put on the same clothes I had on and made myself a cup of coffee. By this time it was already nine and my heart was still at the clinic but cleaning had been a good distraction.

After drinking my coffee, I washed the cup and that is when I received the call to go to the clinic because Azure was awake.

I packed her some fresh clothes because I wasn’t sure if I would be going back home with her.

I walked into the hospital after getting there and a different receptionist from the one I had left directed me to where the doctor was.

I knocked once and got into the office, minutes later; Azure was brought in by a nurse. She looked pale and tired, I stood up and embraced her. I didn’t know why I did it but my heart was with her.

After an awkward silence, I let her go and helped her take a seat.

‘I wish there was a better way of doing this.’ The doctor began ‘Tell me my baby is fine.’ She said her eyes glistering with tears He sighed wearily

‘Ms. Mwila your pregnancy is ectopic.’

She turned to look at me then we looked at the doctor

‘Ec what?’ I asked

‘Ectopic.’ He repeated

‘What does that even mean?’ she asked in a weak tone

‘This is a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.’ He began

We both looked at him with blank faces

‘What causes it? I mean how did it get fertilized outside the uterus?’ I asked ‘An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg attaches itself in a place other than inside the uterus. Almost all ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube and are thus sometimes called tubal pregnancies. And in this case, Ms Mwila’s case is not different. The fallopian tubes are not designed to hold a growing embryo; thus, the fertilized egg in a tubal pregnancy cannot develop properly and must be treated.’ He further said

‘I still don’t get how it got into the fallopian tube.’ I said

‘They are many reasons that can cause an ectopic pregnancy; an infection or inflammation of the fallopian tube can cause it to become partially or entirely blocked. Scar tissue from a previous infection or a surgical procedure on the tube may also impede the egg’s movement. Previous surgery in the pelvic area or on the tubes can cause adhesions. Abnormal growths or a birth defect can result in an abnormality in the tube’s shape. They are many more reasons that can cause it but the ones I have given you are the most likely ones.’

‘Ms Mwila is there anything I have listed above that you think could have caused this?’ he asked

I turned to look at her.

She shook her head.More interesting stories on Topster Stories App

‘Are you sure?’ he asked

This time she nodded

He sighed

‘Whilst cleaning you we discovered you have healing cuts.’ That was news to me.

‘I had an accident a month ago, they don’t hurt as much as they used to.’ She responded

‘You had an accident?’ I asked her

She ignored my question her eyes fixed on the doctor

‘Did you by any chance have any pelvic pain after all this?’

‘I used to experience some pain yes but I never thought it would have such effects.’ She said in a low tone, her voice almost breaking. I reached my hand for hers.

‘So what is the way forward?’ I asked

‘Laparoscopic surgery under general anaesthesia has to be performed. This procedure involves a surgeon using a laparoscope to remove the ectopic pregnancy and repair or remove the affected fallopian tube.’

‘So you mean that my baby can’t survive this?’ Azure asked this time tears falling ‘I am sorry Ms Mwila, I am afraid we can’t do much because it is better to remove it in the early stages or it might affect you too; which might lead into death.’ He said

His words hit a soft and fragile spot, I could feel my legs grow jelly weak.

‘I will leave the two of you alone, come to a conclusion so that we decide the way forward.’ He said before leaving his office to us

Azure allowed the flood of tears to fall and I moved closer to hold her ‘Hush baby, hush.’ I said my own tears betraying me ‘My baby, Jason our baby.’

I felt her pain, it was a beautiful thing knowing that we would have a child together.

‘Jason I am scared.’ She told me honestly her arms wrapped around my neck ‘We are in this together baby, we are.’ I told her honestly

Minutes later she was prepared for surgery and as she went into the theatre my heart went out to her, some bad aura told me that it was the last I was seeing of her and I couldn’t help but break down; causing people around me to sympathize with me.
