Chapter fifteen

 

 

Victor pov

 

“Ife is inside”

 

“Oh my God!” I said.

 

“Let wait for the firefighters” the principal said. “Dat is our best option” he said.

 

“I can’t do dat” I voiced out. Afraid of what Ife’s fate will be if we wait

 

“I have to save her” I said.

 

“What!” they all exclaimed.

 

“Look boy, seems like u are ready to die” the principal said.

 

“Where is the key to the storage” I asked. Interrupting the principal

 

“Are u daft?” Mr kudus asked.

 

“Just give me the keys” I shouted at him while he flinched.

 

“Ok” he said and threw the storage keys at me.

 

I soak my body with water and wrap myself with a well soaked blanket.

 

I was about to go in when I felt a hand on my shoulder.

 

“U might die” junior said.

 

“Thanks for caring, but it is better to die with her than live alone without her” I said.

 

I opened the door to the storage using a part of the wet blanket on the hot knob of the door, I was almost overwhelmed by the on rush of hot air from the storage and entered, wondering if this is stupidity, bravery or just the fact that I can’t lose Ife

 

“Ife!” I called putting the towel on my nose.

 

“Ife!” I called again.

 

I passed through a section of storage room the fire hasn’t reached yet.

 

“Ife!” I called when I heard someone coughing.

 

I ran to the direction and saw her.

 

“Ife!” I called.

 

I put the towel on her nose, placing her hand on the wet blanket. “Hold this to your nose” l said as I piggy backed her, and go back the route I came from. Most of the place I passed through before were now blocked by burnt log.

 

She was coughing hard because of the smoke.

 

“Am going to protect you” I said.

 

I walked to the other side of the room which has less fire and burnt log and carry her out through the side door of the storage room, it was a narrow escape.

 

Everyone rushed to us as they saw us. Thankfully we didn’t sustain grave injuries, just some minor burns and Ife’s cough

 

They already called the ambulance and, we were both taken to the hospital.

 

Later in the evening, Ife’s parents came by. Ife was not awake yet.

 

I wonder how she got locked in the storage room and what exactly was she doing there.

 

It was just suscipious.

 

 

Esther pov

 

I went to Lekan house after, I banged on his door angry.

 

He lives with his thug older brother.

 

He opened the door.

 

“Esther, what are u doing here?” he asked.

 

“Are u crazy or what?” I asked.

 

“What do u mean?” he asked.

 

“I said I want the girl out of the school not out of dis world” I shouted.

 

“Oh dat? but I did dat for you” he said.

 

“What? U almost killed someone. Talking to you was a mistake I don’t want to see you again u this murderer” I said and walked out on him.

 

‘I have to plan for something better’ I thought.

 

 

(Oba school the next day)

 

 

Junior pov

 

 

I went to school the next day, determined to find whomever was responsible for the fire and punish them.

 

All my thoughts was centered on yesterday, the fire, Victor’s stupidly rushing in to save Ife, I wonder if I can risk my life just for that girl. His words yesterday before he went into the fire I could not forget ‘Thanks for caring, but it is better to die with her than live alone without her’ but is it the same for me?

 

These were my thoughts as I walked over to where June and her goons are seated.

 

“Are u the one who tried to hurt ife?” I asked.

 

“What do you mean?” she asked.

 

“Answer me” I said and used my hand to slam the table while her and goons looked at me bewildered by my sudden action.

 

“Look here, I may be a bully but am not a murderer, there is no way I will try to kill a girl bcoz of a guy dat doesn’t like me what will be my benefits” she said and I could sense she wasn’t lying.

 

 

“Then do u have any idea who might?” I asked.

 

“Am not sure” she said.

 

“But Esther is also not in good terms with Ife” she said.

 

“Is Esther not Vic ex girlfriend” I asked.

 

“Yes” she said.

 

“OK thanks” I said and left for my seat.

 

“Could Esther be the culprit?”

 

 

Ife pov

 

I woke up and found myself in the hospital.

 

Both my dad and mom were seated, looking all worked up.

 

“Mama” I called.

 

“Ife” she said surprised and held my hand.

 

“How did I get here?” I asked.

 

“Oh my baby, u were locked in the midst of a raging fire if it wasn’t for your friend victor who saved u…” she said unable to finish her sentence.

 

“Victor, where is he?” I asked worried.

 

“Don’t worry, he is fine” the principal said while I sighed deeply.

 

“For how long have I been here?” I asked.

 

” almost three days now” my dad said.

 

 

“Oh” I said.

 

“We were thinking after u wake up, we leave on Saturday” he said.

 

The principal already knew am leaving, my dad told him.

 

“Why do u have to bring dat up now” my mom scold my dad.

 

Am still leaving, I have like two days with Vic.

 

‘And I haven’t even told him’ I thought

 

Lost in thought I couldn’t hear what the elders was saying.

 

“Ife, Ife… ” my mom called.

 

“Yes” I said.

 

“Are you ok” she asked.

 

“Yes” I said.

 

“How did u get locked up” my parent asked.

 

“A girl from a junior class told me dat a teacher was looking for me, I went there, found no one.”

 

“I was hit with something and was knocked out” I explained.

 

“Dat means someone deliberately attacked you?” the principal asked.

 

“Yes” I answered.

 

“Oh my God!” Both my mom and dad exclaimed.

 

“Do you remember the girl sent to call you?” the principal asked.

 

 

“Not really but if I see her I will” I said.

 

“Ok, I will get back to you before u leave” he said.

 

“Take good care of her” he added

 

“Thank you sir”my mom said while my dad saw him off.

 

“Mom pls am hungry” I said.

 

“Ah, don’t mind me I will quickly ask your dad to drive me home to get ur food” she said.

 

“Ok” I replied.

 

“Am coming” she said and left

 

She left as junior entered.

 

“Hi” he said

 

“Hey” I replied with a smile.

 

“You seem better now” he said.

 

“Yea” I said.

 

“Just want to ask you a question, is Esther the one who knocked you out?” he asked.

 

“No, the person who’s presence I felt didn’t seem like a lady and Esther was in the class when dat girl called me” I said.

 

“Oh I see, I heard dat you are leaving on Saturday” he said looking sad.

 

“Yes, I have to” I said.
