I was contemplating on telling the police or going there myself. She gave me three days, just threw days or she’d hurt my daughter.

“Okay. But maybe you should come and meet my boss.” She said.

 

“You speak of your boss like she’s a nice person. What’s her name?” I asked.

 

“Ma Vanessa. That’s what I call her.” She said and I was shocked.

 

“Vanessa you say?” I said.

 

“It may not have been the same Vanessa threatening my daughter’s life.” I thought.

 

“Could you please describe her?” I asked.

 

“Why all these questions? Is anything the problem?” She asked.

 

“No nothing, I may know her that’s all.” I said.

 

“Okay she’s a fair lady and she is loaded in the hip area.” She said and it sounded like Vanessa.

 

“So her accent? Does she have a peculiar way of talking?” I asked.

 

“Yes. She does talk like a British, she just came back from United state of America.” She smiled.

 

“Is that so?” I said. That description matched my target.

 

“Is anything the matter?” She asked.

 

“Oh nothing, I’ll call you.” I said and drove home.

 

I decided to call the police immediately.

 

“Hello dpo. I think I know where my daughter is. Assemble your men immediately, I’ll send you the address.” I said.

 

“Okay sir.” He said and hung up.

 

I waited in panic and fear for a what seemed like a long time and then a call came in. My hands shook as I was picking up my phone.

 

It was the head of the police.

 

“Hello? Any news about my daughter?” I asked nervously.

 

“Your daughter is in safe hands now.” He said and my heart melted. It felt like a heavy truck was lifted of my chest.

 

“Oh thank God so where is she?” I asked.

 

“She’s on her way now with one of my men.” He said.

 

“And the criminal?” I asked.

 

“That’s what I wanted to let you know.” He said with a sad tone.

 

“She escaped.” He said.

 

“What?! How could you have let her escape” I thundered.

 

“We’re sorry sir but it seemed like she knew we were coming.” He said.

 

“What about her employees?” I asked.

 

“Does she have employees?!” He asked.

 

“Of course she does, who do you think takes care of her house?” I asked.

 

“Alright. We’ll search the place and let give you an update.” He said.

 

“Okay.” I said and hung up.

 

“These people that don’t know how to do their jobs.” I muttered to myself.

 

 

I heard the gate of my house open after a few minutes and I quickly rushed to my window to see who it was and I saw a police van drive in.

 

“That must be my Lisa.” I thought and ran downstairs like a child.

 

Lisa got down from the car as soon as the saw me and we ran towards each other and we got engaged in a long emotional hug.

 

“I missed you dad.” She said.

 

“Don’t ever do this to me again.” I said kissing her forehead.

 

“Let’s go inside.” I said and made to go inside with her then I remembered the police man that actually drove her in.

 

“Thank you so much for returning my daughter to me.” I said.

 

“It wasn’t easy but with your help and that of this lady, it was possible.” He said and another lady came out from the van and it was Angel.

 

“I thought your boss said she didn’t have any employees.” I said.

 

“She’s not an employee.” He said.

 

“What’s that?” I asked and looked at her.

 

“It seems like you know each other.” He said.

 

“Yea we’ve met.” I said.

 

“Alright, I’ll leave you guys now. I have some other things to do.” He said and got in his van and drove off.

 

I was still staring at Angel, wondering what she’s got to hide.

 

“You’ve got some explaining to do.” I said.

 

 

Then she bowed her head and sadness.

 

“Daddy, I think it’s best we talk inside.” Lisa said

 

“Alright.” I said and we all went in.

We got to the living room and we all sat down.

 

“So start talking.” I said a little rude.

 

“Won’t you at least get something for me to drink?” She asked.

 

“You don’t deserve anything you liar.” I thundered.

 

“Come on dad, don’t be rude.” Lisa said and made for the kitchen, soon she was back with a bottle of juice and a glass cup.

 

She served Angel the juice and she started sipping.

 

“I’m not really an employee.” She said.

 

“Of course I know that now. Then what are you?” I asked.

 

“Vanessa was involved in illegal things. I’m her younger cousin, from the village. She told me she was going to polish me. But when I got to the city, she turned me into a slut.” She said in disgust.

 

Lisa and I exchanged glances while Angel continued.

 

“I didn’t want to do it. But she threatened to throw me out in the streets and I had no money with me and nowhere to go.” She said.

 

“So you’re a prostitute, didn’t you tell the police that?” I asked.

 

“No, I told them I was a relative.” She said.

 

 

“So when your daughter came in, the men mishandled her. I was touched and I knew I couldn’t beg Vanessa or she’d ruin my life. So I started sneaking food to your daughter and making her comfortable whenever Vanessa was not around.

 

And she was always out so your daughter was comfortable most of the times. Any time she got back, I’d quickly tie your daughter up again so she wouldn’t suspect a thing. All these were happening until the police came but I suspected Vanessa knew already so I left a night before so she wouldn’t drag me with her. She fled and left Lisa in the hidden room. When I was sure she had left, I went back to the house. I even had to break the door because she locked it up and took the keys. And the police came and rescued your daughter.” She said.

“Please Charles, forgive me for lying to you. At least now you know why I did.” She said

 

I hesitated for a while then my daughter nudged me a little.

 

“Okay. I forgive you. Everyone makes mistakes, many realizes them but only a few repents from it.” I said.

 

“So does that mean you’ve forgiven me?” She asked and her face brightened up.

 

“Yes.” I smiled broadly.

 

I had known Angel for a while now and she was everything I needed in a woman.

 

She was beautiful, kind and had a good heart and most of all, she could cook.

 

I still had the ring I wanted to give Mirabel in my pocket and I brought it out and knelt before her.

 

“Angel, I know we haven’t gotten time to get to know each other but I’ve watched your movement for a while now and I must confess, you’re blowing my mind.” I said and watched her reaction.

 

She already stood and was shedding tears already.

 

“Will you marry me?” I asked.

 

She waited for what seemed like forever but it had only been about 30 seconds then she said yes.

 

“Yes!” She said.

 

“Yes?” I asked and slid the ring into her finger and then I stood up to hug her and Lisa came and joined us too.
