CONFESSIONS OF AN ESCORT

_04_

My second appointment was not as fun filled, the man didn’t want to open up. He was such a teddy bear the only thing he wanted to do was cuddle and at some point I almost felt suffocated. This was good for me because it meant I didn’t have to carry more condoms from the hospital to use because the ones I had would last me a few more days.

At around 11PM I was home, I knew Sean was sleeping and the only thing I had to do was take a bath then sleep. Tomorrow was Sunday and I always spent it with him.

Sunday morning I was woken up by Chisenga’s worship, I had not been in church in years but I always allowed her to go with Sean because I didn’t want him to grow up like me.

‘Good morning mummy.’ Sean says getting on my bed

I look at him and a wave of sadness almost hits me, he looks like his father and each day it gets worse.

‘Morning baby.’ I say removing the covers on one side so that he joins me

‘I wonder why you never let me sleep with you, this is like a princess bed.’ He says shaking his body a little

‘A princess what?’ I ask laughing

‘A princess bed mummy, it’s so comfortable I bet if I slept here I would refuse to wake up.’

‘And miss school?’

‘Well it’s comfortable.’

‘Exactly why you are never sleeping in this bed.’ I say kissing his cheeks

He laughs

‘Are you coming to church with us?’ He asks in a very small voice

‘Yes baby I am coming to church with you.’

I see the grin on his face, he has never stopped asking even though I turn him down every other week. But today I just feel the need to go with him, we haven’t been spending time together I am beginning to feel bad about it.

We start getting ready at 8, I am told the service is at 10 and we have to be there 10minutes before so that we can find seats and prepare ourselves for the service. I don’t know what preparation that is but I don’t protest.

Isn’t it funny how your closet can be full of clothes and yet you feel like you have nothing to wear, well after twenty minutes of going through it I finally settle for a white flared dress and red stilettos. Sean decides to wear matching clothes so he goes all white and red trainers.

‘We look perfect.’ I say

‘Take a photo.’

I get my phone and get a photo of us before we drive off. Chisenga is seated in the front with me, she usually drives them to church but since I am going with them today; I am the one doing the driving.

We arrive at Mount Zion Christian Centre in Kabulonga just in time.

‘Welcome to my Father’s house.’ Sean says and I almost want to choke on my saliva if not for the times I have heard this line in black American movies whenever someone is invited to church

‘Thank you.’ I say

We get out of the car and Chisenga greets a few people, Sean does too and he is excited to introduce me as his mummy.

‘It’s nice to finally meet you, Sean doesn’t miss a chance to talk about you.’

‘Dr. Katie.’ I say extending my hand

‘Prof. Mwansa.’ The lady says shaking it

We excuse ourselves and go into the church, it looks welcoming. The atmosphere is friendly too and the choir that is singing is just amazing. After a few worship songs, we get into praise and afterwards the Pastor comes and the service begins.

Surprisingly I don’t lose focus and it feels nice just being here with all these people.

‘See, it wasn’t that bad.’ Sean says as he buckles up after its done

‘You are not coming?’ I ask Chisenga

‘No I need to see someone.’

I don’t ask

I give her some money to use if she needs anything and if she is stuck I tell her to call me and I can pick her up.

‘Take care of yourself.’

‘You guys have fun.’ She responds

A part of me can’t help but wonder who it is that she wants to see but I know it is none of my business so I let it go.

‘What do you want to do?’

‘How about lunch?’

‘Where?’

‘Debonairs.’ He says excitedly

I don’t know why I even asked when I knew he would say Debonairs

Since we are already in Kabulonga, we drive to Kabulonga Mall.

‘Mummy can we do this more often?’ He asks just before i can make the order ‘Yes baby.’

‘Something meaty, with extra meat please.’ He says to the attendant

We are told to wait for 20 minutes before our order is ready.

‘Mummy.’

‘Yes baby.’

‘Do we have relatives?’

‘What?’

‘Yes mummy do we have relatives? Apart from Chichi.’ I sigh not sure I want to respond to that question

‘Yes baby we have relatives.’

‘Okay.’ He says without another word

‘I need to use the bathroom.’ He tells me running off even before I respond ‘Please be careful.’ I scream after him ‘Looks like a handful.’ George says

‘Hey you.’ I tell him standing up to hug him

‘Seems we will be running into each other more often.’ I laugh

‘I am guessing that is your son.’

‘Yes he is.’ I respond all of a sudden feeling uncomfortable

None of my family members have ever met my child because to them I died the minute I got pregnant by Ezra.

‘Mummy is the pizza ready?’ Sean asks out of breath

‘I haven’t checked baby.’

‘Hey young man.’ George says

‘Hey Sir.’ He responds as politely as possible

‘Baby this is uncle George, George my son Sean.’ I say ‘Nice to meet you Sean.’

‘Like wise Sir.’ My baby responds formally

‘I hope you are still coming for the baby shower.’ ‘I will be there.’

‘Bring him along, his grandparents will be there too.’

‘When is it again?’

‘Next weekend.’

‘Mummy I have church next weekend and I can’t miss.’ ‘You do?’

‘Chichi didn’t tell you?’

‘I am sure she forgot.’

‘Oh okay.’

I turn to look at George

‘Looks like it will just be me and Urah.’ I say

‘I would have really loved for him to come.’

‘Next time.’

‘Alright you guys have a good time.’ He says

‘Sure.’

I watch as he leaves before turning to Sean

‘What church program?’

‘I think you haven’t told me about my grandparents for a reason and so I will wait.’ He says leaving me standing there as he collects our pizza, and now I am wondering at what point my eight year old became this mature but also I can’t help but think of why George is persistent on me going for the baby shower with my child. Something is not adding up somewhere.
