In the morning I am woken up by Dr. Clinton’s call, he says he is flying together with the patient and her parents and will be in Kapiri by seven in the morning. I get out of bed and prepare myself. Urah is surprisingly up and in the living room making coffee.

 

‘And you?’

 

‘I need the energy.’ She responds and I cant help but laugh

 

‘Will see you later, I have surgery to perform.’ I say

 

‘All the best babe.’

 

‘Thank you.’ I respond then drive off

I am both anxious and scared, I couldn’t sleep. I asked dad to provide as with his private plane so that I fly to Kapiri but Dr. Clinton advised that its best he flies there alone with Brianna’s nurse then the rest of us can drive there.

 

By the time we are arriving in Kapiri its after 9, we have used four cars. I am with my husband, mum and dad, Leonie with Francis, Mark with his fiancé then Sean with Mer’vis. I know we have not always seen eye to eye but I am just grateful that they are all here for us and I know I won’t even know how to thank them enough.

 

Instead of lodging, we drive straight to the hospital, I have been very skeptical about all this but after getting here I must say I am very impressed.

 

 

I call Dr. Clinton and he says the doctor has already had a look at Brianna and she has left some forms that we need to sign if at all we are accepting for the surgery to be performed.

 

Shortly he meets us in the parking lot.

 

‘But why did she leave without even seeing us.’

 

‘She has guests that she is hosting and since everything has been left in my hands she didn’t see a need to see you.’ He responds

 

‘What sort of incompetence is this? Doesn’t she know that my child’s life is hanging on a thread and right now we need her?’ I say in tears

 

‘Ma’am I would suggest you calm down, she is very professional and Brianna is in good hands.’

 

‘We are paying her lots of money to do this surgery and she will just leave our child because she has guests?’

 

‘Brianna has been admitted and today she is being prepared for surgery. I would suggest you calm down.’

 

‘I want to see her!’ I demand

 

‘She has already left the hospital.’

 

‘The incompetence and inhumanity!’ I yell more tears falling

 

‘Does any of you know where I can find the doctor?’ I ask the people looking on

 

‘I can take you.’ One man says and he gets on our vehicle

 

Mum and dad have remained behind whilst Dr. Clinton has gone with us. We drive for ten minutes before we are directed into the farm that we have been told is the Doctor’s residence.

 

We get there and all of us get out of our vehicles.

 

‘Dr.’ Dr. Clinton says when he calls the very doctor

 

They talk for a few more minutes before he cuts the line

 

‘She has gone to the next farm but will be back in ten minutes, she says one of the workers can direct us inside.’

 

‘I would rather wait here.’

 

‘We will wait here.’ Mer’vis says

 

After what seems like forever, two land cruisers drive in and I am hoping that is the doctor. The stop just close to where we are and doors open.

 

‘Dr. Katie I am really sorry to come here unannounced but we couldn’t wait.’ Dr. Clinton says when history comes face to face with me

 

‘It’s fine Dr.’ She says

 

‘You wanted to see me?’ She asks looking at me as if we have not met a day

 

I am tongue tied unable to believe that I am actually face to face with Katie, my sister. The woman I tried to destroy by putting her dirt out there.

 

‘Yes, we believe you are the doctor that will perform surgery on our daughter.’ I finally manage to say

 

‘I did explain to doctor Clinton here that surgery can only be performed tomorrow, I need your signature on the forms I left with him. Also I am sure he mentioned about the blood right?’ She looks from me to George

 

‘Yes.’

 

‘So is there anything else you need?’ She asks

 

‘That will be all.’ I say

 

She is about to drive off when another car drives in, it stops just where we are a man looking like a Demi god comes out.

 

‘Are you okay?’ He asks holding her waist

 

‘I am.’ She says with a smile

 

‘I will see you tomorrow then.’ She says and she gets into the car and drives off leaving me in shock

 

The man also follows behind her but the other car has remained, the door opens and Urah comes out.

 

‘See how God works.’ She says standing akimbo

 

I want the ground to swallow me, I am done for the day.

 

‘Urah don’t, this is hard for all of us.’ Mark says

 

She looks into his direction and I see how her face doesn’t change, it is void of emotions.

 

‘You all should be praying that surgery happens because what you did to that girl.’ She pauses without saying a word

 

‘Babe let’s go.’ The man who was in the car with her says rolling down the window

 

I can’t help but notice the ring on her finger, I look at Mark who has his eyes fixed on her face

 

‘Joan pray, if I were you I would be praying because your child’s life is in that lady’s hands.’ She says walking off

 

She turns around to look at me

 

 

‘And that blood, how do you plan on telling all your people here who the real father to your child is.’ She says and walks away, everyone stares at me with blank stares except George.

 

My life has never felt this miserable, it’s like it has come to a stand still and I have no control over it. How do I even begin to feel all these emotions? So much is messed up, firstly my child who is dying, when it seems that hope has been found it happens to be with the very woman I unapologetically tried to destroy. And now my secrets have to come to the open because that is the other way that she can be saved.

 

‘We need to find a place to lodge.’ Leonie says

 

‘Go ahead, I want to see Brianna.’ I say

 

I turn to look at Francis, I feel terrible because Mer’vis and I contributed to all this. We asked Leonie to come and considering the history that Katie had it was only natural that he left her. We know he is not happy in his marriage, worse off because Leonie is not the saint that she presented herself to be and now she is showing it to the world without shame.

 

Everyone gets back in their cars and drives off except for George who hasn’t started the engine yet.

 

‘Don’t you feel ashamed to be here right now? Your sister, the woman whose life you managed to destroy is the one with the capacity of healing your child. The same one who had evidence two years ago to bring you down and yet she didn’t because she is not like you. The same one whose man you managed to push away. Have you even thought of the possibility that she might change her mind tomorrow and that might mean the end of Brianna? Or that she will accidentally make something go wrong and your daughter’s life will end?’

 

‘George she is your daughter too.’

 

He laughs

 

‘Joan you are a fool for thinking that I am naive.’

 

‘George why are you talking to me like that?’

 

‘You really think I don’t know huh? That Brianna by blood is not mine? That you paid someone to have Ezra convinced into selling his sperm for some money? That you had his sperm brought into the country and that your child is his? You think I don’t know.’

 

I look at George not recognizing the man I am looking at.

 

How can he know all this information and yet kept quiet? How come he stuck by me?

 

‘Why haven’t you told Ezra all this while?’

 

‘Because not everyone is like you and Mer’vis Joan, they are good people out there and I am one of them. Somehow life always teaches us lessons one way or the way. And you wife dearest your time of downfall is here.’ He says

 

I can’t even look at him

 

‘When all this is over, the divorce papers will be waiting for you.’ He says and starts the engine
