There is nothing in the world that I would rather do than tell Katie how much I have missed her and still want to be with her, but how can I when I have Mer’vis in my life. She has been nothing but good to me and I don’t see the reason why I should hurt her now when we are almost tying the knot.

 

‘You don’t look yourself.’ Mer’vis says as we move out of the cake shop

 

We have come for cake tasting, I don’t even know why she is so strong about us tying the knot this quick when we could first settle here and then do all this later. I mean all formalities have been done so why the rush.

 

‘I just have a lot on my mind.’ I say honestly

 

She eyes me

 

‘You are not planning on chickening out, are you now?’ She asks

 

I almost want to scream for her to shut up but I don’t want to go on her bad side

 

‘Why would I do that.’

 

‘I donno.’ She says shrugging her shoulders

 

 

We get into the vehicle and I watch as she struggles with her safety belt, she is mostly this nervous when something is bugging her.

 

‘Talk to me.’ I say

 

‘Fuck.’ She cusses letting it go

 

I sigh and look at her

 

‘Ezra I am scared.’ She says honestly

 

‘About what exactly?’

 

‘This! Us.’

 

‘What about us?’

 

‘I left a life behind so that I can start one with you, I am in a foreign country with no job or anything and I am scared you might leave me for a career woman.’

 

‘Mer’vis I have never known you to be one that is intimidated by other women, where is this coming from?’

 

‘Forget it.’

 

‘I am not forgetting it if it’s bugging you.’

 

‘It’s what Katie said.’

 

I hide the curiosity on my face

 

‘What did she say?’

 

‘About being a career woman and all, what if a time comes and you want more? Just what if?’

 

‘Mer’vis.’

 

‘Baby look at her.’

 

‘My God where is all this coming from?’

 

‘I know you told me that you are over her, but Ezra one look at Sean even a blind person can tell that that is your child.’

 

I sigh

 

‘Yes he is my son.’

 

She opens her mouth to say something but keeps quiet

 

‘Three days to our wedding Ezra, just three days.’ She says tears falling

 

‘This doesn’t change anything, you know how I feel about you and it will never change.’

 

She shakes her head vigorously

 

‘This changes everything, all our plans. All our dreams Ezra.’

 

‘Mer’vis I have no doubts about you or the fact that I want to spend forever with you. I didn’t know about Sean, but now he is in the picture and there is nothing that I can do about it. He is my son and I have to take full responsibility for him, and as my woman you have to accept him.’

 

‘And if I don’t?’ She questions

 

‘Baby.’

 

‘Ezra what will happen if I don’t accept him?’

 

‘Let us go home, I am tired I need to rest.’ I say reversing out of the car park

 

 

I watch from the corner of my eye as more tears fall, I know what she must be feeling. From the word go Mer’vis told me she could never date a man with kids because she couldn’t have her own. When she was in UNI she got pregnant and in the process of having it terminated things went wrong and that is when they told her that she could never have children of her own. I know she says she is over it but which woman doesn’t want to hold her own kids? We have talked about children at length and the decision we made was to adopt but none of our families would know the truth. But with this information I don’t know if we are still going ahead with that.

 

We get home and none of us has said a word to each other, I had wanted us to stay in one of my apartments but she insisted that we stay with mum for the time being so that the two of them can get to know each other.

 

‘Hey you two.’ Mum says with a huge smile

 

I smile back and Mer’vis does too, no one would even tell that we are not even talking.

 

‘How did the cake tasting go?’ She asks

 

I don’t know what’s with mothers and taking such events personal, it’s like she wants us to have the wedding that she couldn’t have.

 

‘It went well, except I am not sure I want to eat anymore cake in my life.’ I say getting a piece from her freshly baked apple pies

 

‘Wash your hands.’ She yells and I can’t help but laugh

 

‘She used to do that all the time growing up.’ I say to Mer’vis

 

‘Hunny you have got to keep your eyes on this one because after Saturday he is your headache.’

 

Mer’vis laughs, she is a good woman and I wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt her. It’s just sad that Sean is now in the picture because I know that she will constantly compare herself to Katie.

 

 

We have lunch together and the ladies do the dishes whilst I clean the kitchen, I have always helped out and even back in Germany when I and Mer’vis were staying together we would help each other with chores.

 

‘You two go and bond now, let me not keep you here for long.’ Mum says when we are done with everything

 

We walk to our room as if everything is okay, but immediately we enter I know it isn’t the case because the silence returns.

 

‘Can you get me a driver?’ She asks as she strips off her clothes

 

‘Where do you want to go?’

 

‘I need to see Katie.’ She says

 

I swallow hard

 

‘Okay I will arrange one.’ I say

 

She grabs a bath towel and wraps it around her body.

 

‘Do you want to tell me why though?’

 

‘If I am going to be your wife we need boundaries, because Sean is what makes the two of you have any sort of relationship and I won’t tolerate anything more or less.’

 

‘Unless you have a problem with that.’ She says eyeing me through the mirror

 

I shake my head, this side of her not sure if I have seen before.
