PEARL’S POV

Early this morning, I was released and didn’t waste anytime as I took to my heels.

From the police station to my house is quite far but since I had no money I have to run.

Aria told me about my dad’s condition yesterday and I’ve been worried since.

I hope he’s alright! I’ve even used up all my savings for his medication.

Toby was diagnosed with brain tumor and the doctors had set a date for his treatment and that was last two months and he’s treatment will commence this month ending.

The amount that would be paid was expensive that’s why I’ve always tried to save some money even though granny doesn’t want to get treated.

But as it is now, I don’t think what I have on me would be enough for the treatment and because of my stupidity, granny’s condition has deteriorated.

He’s undergoing the chemotherapy treatment at the moment and before the tumor spreads, we have to do an immediate surgery.

“Ouch.” I winced in pain when I felt something pierce my foot.

Why didn’t I wear my slippers in the first place?

I stopped running and limped to towards a tree. When I got there, I held a branch for support and checked my foot.

It was one of those sharp rocks. Some was still sticking inside so I closed my eyes and count to three before pulling it out.

Am glad I was not bleeding so much. I limped all the way home. But the morning sun was already up, shining so brightly that it blinded my vision.

As I neared my cottage, I heard the sea roaring so vibrantly.

“Granny. Granny Toby. Am home!” I said happily and got into our room.

“Thank God you’re here Pearl.” Betsy said when I got in.

I looked at the bed and saw granny lying on the bed with eyes shut tightly. He looked so sick.

“Granny?” I went to his side and held his hand. He opened his eyes slowly.

“What is wrong with him Betsy? What happened? Why is he looking so weak?” I asked and ran my hand on his face and checked his temperature.

“He fell sick when you left yesterday. I wanted to take him to the hospital but he refused. All he asked was you.” Betsy explained.

“Does that mean that you stayed here all night?”

She nodded.

“Thanks Betsy. I always knew I could count on you for anything. Am here now, please go home and rest. I will call for you if I need help.”

“I can’t leave you Pearl. I will stay here and..” she stopped and yawned.

“See… it’s clear you had no sleep last night. Please go home and rest a bit. We’ll be fine.”

“Okay. Have this money” she stretched a neatly packed notes to me. “You’ll need it.”

I stared at the money for a while. It’s a lot of money. Where did she get it from?

“Whose money is that Betsy?”

She went quiet for something, scratched her hair before talking.

“Erm… from Meg…”

“Stop it! I won’t hear anymore. You can keep the money but I don’t need it.”

“Am sorry Pearl, we didn’t plan to hurt you.”

“You should not be sorry Betsy. You did this for my welfare but it’s went the wrong way and I understand that perfectly, but I will never use that money. I would rather beg on the streets than spend the money which was responsible for my arrest as well as my granny’s condition.”

“You’re not mad at us?”

“No why should I be?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Take care but don’t try this again.”

“Alright bye.” She said and left.

“Granny? Do you want some tea?”

He shook his head.

“There’s a box in my drawer please bring it out for me.”

“Box?”

“Yes.”

I went to the small drawer and opened it. There was so many boxes in here so which one?

“The wooden one.” He replied as if he knew I was having difficulty in finding it.

I picked the wooden one and brought it to him.

He took it with shaky hands and opened it while lying down still.

He brought out two necklaces. They were so beautiful.

“These are beautiful granny. Who is it for?”

“You. Their yours Pearl.”

“Mine? How is that so?”

“Have a look.” He said and opened one locket.

It was a faded picture of a man, woman and a girl. I think that’s their daughter. But it wasn’t clear enough.

Somehow they looked familiar and the little girl resemble me a little.

“Do you remember them?”

“No. But they seem familiar.” I answered.

“Come closer.” He said and managed to get up in a sitting position.

I went and sat beside him.

“Turn around.” He stated and I did so. He carefully put it around my neck.

I touched it and looked at it from my neck. They seem geniune and pure.

“Always have it around your neck. It’s might lead you to where you truly belong. Always keep it save. It’s a pure diamond and the other one with crystals is a gold. ” He said and held his head in pain.

“Granny?”

“I’m fine Pearl, don’t worry about me. As I was saying, the necklace was found together with you and the ones in the picture is your parents. I’m sure about that.”

“What do you mean granny?” My head was in a frenzy. I couldn’t understand a thing of what he was saying. The couple’s in this locket was not even clear. It was just part of their faces that was showing.

“I found you some years ago with one necklace on your neck and the other tangled in your hair.”

“You mean this are my parents?”

“I think so.”

“Yes but…”

“Don’t say more granny. No matter what, you’ll always be my granny Tobias Darvis and I would always be your Pearl Darvis okay?”

Then I hugged him, he hugged me back weakly. Granny is really not well. He’s only pretending. I have to take him to the hospital today.

“Have you taken something?”

“Yes granny. I ate something.” I lied.

“Will you lie to me Pearl? You haven’t eaten anything since last night have you?”

“You’re right granny and am really hungry, I can eat an elephant.”

“Oh really?”

“Yes.”

“Then here you are.” He said and brought something from beside his bed and unwrapped it.

“Wow. Granny these are my favorites.” It was lasagna and chocolate cookies. I love cookies a lot.

“I know right? Help yourself with it.”

“But how did you get all this?”

“I had it ordered from our favorite joint.”

“I see.” I took it and placed it on my lap.”

“Ouch granny. It’s hot.” I said when the lasagna burned my lap.

“Let me see.”

“No it’s nothing.” I said and went for a tray and placed it on it.

“So granny, do you know those people in the photo?”

“Not at all. I’ve always leaved in this part of Australia after the death of my son. I lived here with my wife. Then I found you. You were little then my wife and I were so happy. We lived here happily together until,…”

“Grandma left us.” I concluded for him.

“So how sure are you that they’re my parents?” I asked again.

“When I found you the photo was clear. I saw the resemblance between you and the man in the picture. Then I concluded that they’re your parents.”

“But I could be their younger sister too right?” I asked.

“Yeah. But all the same you’re still related and that’s the good thing about it.”

“Come on, eat else the food will get cold.”

“I will eat on one condition.”

“And what’s the condition?”

“We have to go to the hospital. I have a feeling you’re hiding something from me.”

“I told you am fine Pearl. Don’t worry.”

“Why won’t I worry granny? You’re with me but I’m not feeling your presence and I don’t know why that’s why we need to go to the hospital soonest.”

“Listen to me Pearl..”

“No, you listen to me Toby. I joke a lot with so many things but I will never joke with you granny. You’re my everything, I just can’t sit and watch you deal with this illness alone that’s why we need to go to the hospital. Please just agree.”

“Alright. I will go if that’s what will make you happy but you first have to eat huh?”

“That’s better!”
