~~PEARL’S POV ~~

The sun shined brightly today due to the heavy pour yesterday. Birds chirped and sang happily as they filled the blue sky with their wonderful colours.

The wind was gentle like the father’s voice as he prayed over the once bubbly and strong creature who has suddenly gone mute.

All the people present at the graveyard had a sad face on. Those who knew him couldn’t stop the tears and those who didn’t shed few tears from time to time.

But there was one whose facial expression was neutral. Standing all alone with hands folded across shoulders with a distant look. It was obvious that she was oblivious to what was happening in front of her and that was me.

I didn’t know how to react. Should I cry or laugh. Well I can’t laugh because obviously it was not a joyous occasion.

So I just stood there and stared in Oblivion.

How and why it happened was all I could think of. I just couldn’t bring myself into believing it.

Granny was okay. He was strong a bit. He even told me that I can’t get rid of him that easily.

He promised not to leave me so what happened?

Why did he leave me so suddenly? I still don’t believe I lost him and that’s why am not going to cry.

He promised to stay and I believe that he will never break his promise.

I don’t want people thinking that I’ve lost it that’s why I made it to the burial ground in the first place.

Then his coffin was lowered slowly into the pit.

“Miss Darvis.”

I looked up the father and he motioned for me to pour a sand on his coffin.

I sank on both knees and ducked my hand into the sand furiously, walked to where his tomb was and poured it on his coffin. Beautiful memories of the time we spent together came rushing back into my mind.

But I still couldn’t shed a single tear. I just can’t accept that I lost my granny.

After all the necessary prayers, we did the final cross and his coffin was out of sight as the sand covered it.

I placed his favorite flowers on it and stood there for sometime.

“We’re really sorry for your…”

I raised my hand shutting the voices up before looking up. It was a group of our townsmen who walked to me after granny’s burial.

Some nodded and some just shook their heads in sympathy.

So what if I lost my granny, our house, our home my confidante? Am still alive and that’s the most important.

I brought my palms together and bowed slightly.

“Am grateful you’re all showing some kind of care to me however, I will request you to stop giving me those pathetic looks. I really don’t need that now.”

“Alright Pearl, but don’t hesitate to contact us in case you’re in need of any form of support.” One sweet woman said.

I looked up at her and forced a smile and looked down at the rugged hand-me-down clothes I was wearing.

It was one of Aria’s clothes which consists of a black jacket which had a top under and a black trouser which was cut on the right thigh.

I held the jacket and pulled it to myself tightly.

I felt two comforting hands on my shoulder. Once again, I raised my gaze and when I saw who they were, I beamed.

“How are you doing Pearl?” Aria asked.

I just stared at her but made sure the smile didn’t fade. What do I tell her? I don’t even know how am feeling right now. And I don’t want to think about anything. Anything concerning this tragic incident. I’ll live as if it never happened.

“She’s fine. Right Pearl?” Betsy asked smiling at me.

I nodded and looked around the empty graveyard. It’s amazing how the people quickly left to their homes.

I must also think of going home now…

No. Do I have a home?

I don’t have one anymore and that’s the reality.

This is really tough than I had imagined but I hope to pull through.

The odds can never be against me but Pearl will be against it.My hands made it unconsciously to the necklace on my neck. Thank God I have this at least.

With that thought, I looked at them and smiled even wider because I knew deep down within me that somehow things are going to fall in place soon.

Also deep within, I know that am scared, am not fine at all. I feel like screaming so loud that my voice gets lost and asked the universe why things are going so wrong.

“Pearl?” Betsy called.

“Sweetheart, I replied cheerfully. But I was dying inside. I’m just trying to persuade myself that things gonna be fine, that am okay but seriously am not.

I wonder how long I would’ve to put on this act. This charade!

“I made a suggestion Pearl. Did you not hear me?” Aria asked.

“You said something?” I asked Aria.

“I want you to come live with us.”

I raised an eyebrow and glanced at Betsy. She smiled at me.

“What are you saying Aria?” I walked away from them.

“You know my mum loves you a lot and she was the one who requested for you to come live with us.”

“But..”

“No but Pearl. You’re coming with me and that’s it. Thank you. I really can’t wait to have you at home with me. I’ve always wished to have a sister.” She blubbered and hugged me.

Oh goodness, this girl wouldn’t let me decide on my own.

She pulled back and winked at Betsy then they held my hand.

Before I knew it, we were running to somewhere I had no idea of but hell it was refreshing.

“Pearly Pearly, your heart is so pure like a pearl.”

I heard the familiar voices in the garden that looked like a gazebo and couldn’t help but smile genuinely this time as we neared it.

My lovely friends. I ran freely and hugged them one after the other.

“My kids.” I muttered as a tear escaped my eyes. I’m so happy to see them.

My friends sure know how to make me happy and till i forget about my troubles somehow.

“Thanks buddies.” I thanked Aria and Betsy.

“Stop thanking us and let’s have some fun right kids?” Betsy asked affectionately.

“Yayyyy.” They screamed.
