~PEARL’S POV ~

“Don’t Panic Miss Paula. He’s just fallen asleep and It’s normal due to his age. He’s okay so prepare him for home. Come with me to finish the rest of the formalities.”

The doctor said after 30 minutes of screaming thinking that I lost my granny not knowing he just fell asleep because of the surgery.

I nodded happily and followed him to his office.

“Thanks Doctor.” I said after I was through.

“It’s okay.” He said then I left the room with only a few changes in hand because I’ve already used up the 1.5 million Australia dollars.

I walked into granny’s private ward and sat beside him.

I gazed back at granny then just like a miracle, he opened his eyes slightly and smiled.

“Granny.” I called.

“What? Did you seriously think you could get rid of me quickly because you don’t want to go to school? Well prepare cuz am here to stay. With you, forever!” He got up and pulled my cheeks.

“You really scared me Toby. But all the same, am happy you’re up and kicking. I thank my stars.”

“Am sorry for scaring you but shall we get going?”

“Yes. We shall.”

“Hang on. Where did you get the money from to settle the bills?”

“Oh that? Don’t worry. The government took care of that because of your age. I didn’t have to pay a single penny.” I lied.

“Really?” He asked thoughtfully.

“Yeah, now let’s go.”

He shrugged, got up and with steady steps, we walked out of the big hospital.

We got to the junction and I hailed a taxi to our house with all the change left.

As we were in the car, I couldn’t help but think of what will happen now that I have not a single penny on me.

How are we going to manage?

Today is Monday and we came to the hospital on Saturday.

I’ve not been home since I just hope all is well.

Granny glanced at me and I quickly smiled. I don’t want him to think that am worried about something. I made sure she covered my neck so that he wouldn’t see the missing necklace.

Soon we got to our junction and I helped granny out. It was already getting late. I don’t know why am having a feeling of uncertainty.

As we walked to our house, people started staring at us and whispering inaudible words.

What happened? Usually everyone is cheery and wouldn’t stop talking to me and asking questions but it’s different today.

I greeted awkwardly and we walked on.

“Granny.”

“Pearl.”

We both said together.

I stopped walking and looked him in the face.

“Are you also thinking what am thinking?” I asked.

“Yes. Something is definitely wrong. I hope it’s nothing bad.”

“I hope so grann…” I stopped talking when my eyes fell on the sight in front of me.

What the heck?

~ MEGAN’S POV ~

Then suddenly, the earpiece was being pulled from my ear.

I jumped up in fright and my phone went flying out of my hand then it hits something, following with a loud shattering of glasses.

I looked back and it was a huge portrait that fell.

“Ouch!” I winced loudly when i felt a pull on my ear.

I diverted my eyes from the fallen portrait to the one who was pulling it.

“What are you doing mum?” I asked.

What I’ve been planning to do since you told me what you did in Palau. “Let go. It hurts.”

“Just a little while.”

“What are you mum?. Seriously, am beginning to think that you have a problem with me.”

“What!” She let go and I held the ear she pulled.

“Mum, I want to know why you gave me a girl’s name.”

“Huh?” She asked and stared at me as if she knew nothing about what am saying.

“Tell me mum.” I persisted.

“It’s not only a girl’s name, it’s for unisex.” I heard my aunt’s familiar voice from the entrance.

She appeared in the room with her perfect body adorned in an expensive blue dress.

With black hair of wool and her head held high, she waltzed on with an effortless saunter.

The clicking of her heels added rhythm to the soft classical music that played onward without pause in my mind.

Her eyes scanned the room with determination in search of someone when her eyes met mine she smiled.

So beautiful it was like the stars themselves, decided to rest behind the soft cushion of her lips. My beautiful aunt.

“My lovely aunt, I miss you so much.” I let go of my ear and walked to her and hugged her.

“Miss you too darling. Tell me what your mum has been up to.”

“Before that, take a look at me.” I withdraw from the hug, went back a little and removed my jacket leaving my body top on. I intentionally wore this particular top because it shows my abs properly.

“Yes?” Aunt furrowed her eyebrows and flutters her long eyelashes.

With all honesty, Do I look like a girl?” I asked as I put back the jacket. “What? Who says so? You look just like a handsome man.”

“Awww… you’re right aunt.” I said and bit my lips.

“If you knew then why did asked?” As she gave her bag to one of the maids. “Because many people seem to have the illusion that I am a girl.”

“Why?” She seemed surprised.

“Because of the name mom and dad gave me. It’s a feminine name.” “Oh, is that so baby boy?”

“Here we go again!” I drawled and walked away from her. “Did I say something that I wasn’t supposed to?” Aunt asked.

Yes. How many times do I have to tell you that am not a boy?.” I said that before realizing what I said.

“Oh really so you’re not a boy after all but what? A girl?” Mum asked teasingly and giggled.

Aunt tried giggling along but I glared at her and she quickly stopped.”Shut up Amy.”

“Alright!” She said and zipped her mouth by demonstrating it then locked it.”See” then she threw the imaginary key away.

I looked at her and smirked.

“Of course, you’re a big boy but you’ll always remain auntie’s baby boy.” Aunt said and wrapped her arms around my neck giving me a peck in the process.

“That’s better but only if you could convince mum and dad to allow me have a sports car, I will forgive her for thinking that I am a ”

“Not happening.” Mum said.

“I agree.” Aunt replied and let go.

“Aunt?”

“Darling.”she replied nonchalantly.

“Are you perhaps in cahoots with mum now? Why do I feel as if you don’t want to take my side anymore?”

“May I know what you’re going to use the sports car for?” Aunt asked.

What do I tell her now?

I wanted the car to race. I’ve registered already and I can afford the car but mum and dad won’t allow me to race that’s why they’re denying that car.

“Fine. I’ll just have my name changed. I hate you mum.”

“You won’t change your name Megan. I won’t allow that. I loved the name and I’ve always dreamt of naming my child by it whether a boy or girl.”

“And that was the worst mistake you made.”

“Alright enough of the arguments mum and son. How about we sit and talk about this?” Aunt Paula said and moved to sit in the couch.

Mum went to sit beside her.

I felt reluctant to sit with them because all I need now is to go out for sometime.

Maybe to the studio.

I reached into my pocket to take my phone when I realized that it fell when mum pulled my ears.

I went to the huge portrait that just fell and looked around for my phone.

I saw part of it showing from under the portrait.

So I lifted it up and first stared at it for a while.

It was Mariana’s picture. It was taken at the airport and she was beaming beautifully that I was dazed. How come I haven’t seen this picture before?

“Don’t touch that Megan, I’ll have it cleaned up by the house helps. You might get hurt..” Aunt cautioned but the the truth was that, I wasn’t listening.

My concentration was centred on the necklaces around her neck. One looked familiar but I just can’t remember where I saw it.

“That was a picture she took at the airport when we were about to leave for Australia 10 years ago.” Aunt Paula replied slowly with her hand on my shoulder.

When did she get here?

“But why haven’t I seen it before.”

“Yes, that was because we just got that picture yesterday from the CCTV footage at the airport and we decided to make it a portrait.”

“I’m sorry. I just ruined it.”

“No you haven’t, just look around.”

I looked around and my eyes met similar portrait all around the spacious living room. They were about four in number.

It’s evident that the Dominguez has still not gotten over their daughters demise by the look on these portraits even after having a son. That Rudie boy.

She wouldn’t had let me be if he was to be here. He’s currently with the grandparents in California.

“That’s not all, there’s still more. That’s why you shouldn’t worry.” Aunt added.

“I think I saw this necklace somewhere but I just can’t place it.”

“You saw which necklace?” Aunt Paula asked and pulled my shoulders such that I was facing her.

“What are you saying Megan?'” Mum asked and walked to us.

“I said, I think I saw one of these necklaces but I just can’t remember where.” I replied and tried to think hard with my hand massaging my forehead.

“It was this.” I said pointing to the crystal one. ” But I just can’t place it!”

I walked from them. Why can’t I remember where?

Has my memory become this weak? That I can’t remember things?

Wait!

“Aunt? I remember it now! It was in Palau. When I went to Paula.”
