TWENTY FOUR

Pablo’s POV

It had been a while since i had been to church and read the good word. I was always too busy with one thing or another.

I can’t remember the last time i had cast a fervent or if at all i remembered how the Lord’s prayer went like, but as i held Paula’s lifeless body in my arms and as my tears fell on her face, I cast a prayer that bared my soul.

“Please, take me if you must, just let her live.”

I whispered as I rocked her back and forth.

From the distance, a bright and blinding light shone through the fog that surrounded it.

My mother stepped closer and touched my face gently.

I nestled my head into the familiar calloused palm as I used to do a long time ago.

‘’I miss you mummy. I miss you both,’’ I whispered and heaved a sigh.Where is Daddy?” I asked and looked around.

‘’I know. But you don’t have to worry about me, I’m are all right.’’ she said and pulled my cheeks playfully.

‘’I’m here now mum, we are going to have so much fun together,’’ I said as the light glowed brighter. I looked at the light longing and smiled.’’ Look mum, we should go.’’

‘’No my dear,’’ mom said. I looked at her puzzled .’’mum?’’

‘’It’s not yet your time, you can’t leave now.’’ ‘’But…’’

Then I heard the sobs and the anguished call out for my name. My face fell, as I looked about wondering where the voice was coming from.

‘’Go to him, he needs you more than i do. I, will just be fine. I’m okay.’’ I shook my head.’’ I want to come with you mum. I want to be with you.’’

Mum stepped closer, took my hand, and placed it on my chest. ’’ But I never really left you. I always will be here, in the memories we created together.’’

‘’It’s not the same. I miss you both so much. Where is dad?”

“He didn’t come with me” mum whispered.

“But why?” I asked in confusion.

Mum leaned closer and kissed my forehead. ’’ Forget about it. You have to go back now.’’

The sobs and voices had become faint.

Mum urged me to follow the sound.

I nodded and turned. I walked, then ran towards the sound of the voices and sobs. Pablo

‘’Mr. Dominguez….’’ the doctor began.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The heart rate monitor came to life.

The doctor and nurse by the bedside stared in disbelief.

I turned to look at the monitor, as the line on the screen steadily gained momentum.

I turned back to the woman in my arms. She still lay motionless.

‘’Paula?’’ i whispered out her name .’’Babe?’’

Her eyes fluttered then slowly opened and she stared up at me.

‘’Pablo?’’ she said in a croaky whisper.

I grabbed her tighter and sobbed tears of joy this time around, as I muttered ‘thank you’ repeatedly under my breath.

Amy’s POV

I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling.

‘’Hey, dear you are awake,’’ my mum said as she stood up and helped me seat.

‘’Why am I here?’’ I asked looking at the IV drip on my arm then recalled I had fainted after the news of Paula’s death.

‘’Mum, Paula is gone,’’ I said as tears glistered in my eyes.

‘’No dear, she woke up.’’

‘’What? How? The doctor…’’

‘’It’s a miracle is all I can say Amy. She is awake and doing fine though still weak.’’

‘’I have to see her, I need to go to her,’’ I said as I tried to yank the tube off me.

‘’Wait let me get the doctor then we can go see her,’’ she said and walked out. Left alone, I sobbed as I prayed and thanked God for returning my bestie back to me.
