I had just finished preparing lunch when I heard a car drive in, I wasn’t expecting anyone until later in the evening. I peeped through the window and saw a familiar figure jump off, she looked impatient and as my potential mother in law I had to be as presentable as possible. I quickly dashed to the bedroom and wrapped a chitenge on top of my bum short and pulled on a t-shirt on my crop top.

‘How are you mum?’ I greeted when I opened the door, giving her room so that she could enter.

‘I am fine my dear.’ She responded not greeting me back

‘Can I offer you something?’ I asked when we both settled down ‘I am good thank you.’

There was silence between us.

‘Actually I am not staying, I am rushing back to the hospital.’ ‘Hospital? Who is sick?’

‘Your mother.’ She responded looking directly into my eyes

‘My mother is not sick, she is home.’ I answered not appreciating her visit anymore

‘When last did you talk to her? If you even allowed her to say what she wanted to say.’

I kept quiet knowing exactly who and what she was talking about.

‘I am not here to tell you how to live your life or who to forgive. I have heard your story a number of times and I don’t blame you for the route that you are taking.’ ‘Then why are you here?’ I asked much to my surprise

‘She doesn’t have a lot of time, please hear her out.’ ‘Where was she all these years?’

‘Out there making mistakes but she is here now.’

‘Here? Because she is dying right?’ I asked with a chuckle ‘Yes, but does that matter anymore?’

‘What she needs is to make peace with her God and not with me or my dad.’

‘And who told you she hasn’t done that already? Your mother has a few more weeks to live and she is in so much pain. Make time to visit her.’ She said that and left

I walked to the kitchen and switched off the cooker, I knew the pizza I was baking would get ruined but at that moment I didn’t care about anything. I was debating with myself on whether to go and see her or not. Without thinking twice least I change my mind I changed into comfortable slippers and jumped into my car. I got to the hospital an hour later because of the congestion and if not for Mrs. Kazadi spotting me I would have gone back.

‘Come with me.’ She said

I walked behind her until we got to the hospital chapel, it was quiet with very few people on their knees. She led me to the front and we knelt down.

‘Let us pray she said.’

I wasn’t believing her one bit but I chose to do as she did.

She made a sign of the cross, guessing that she was catholic and I closed my eyes waiting for her to say something.

‘Gracious and loving God, we come before you this afternoon aware that what happens in our lives is beyond us and without your divine intervention we are nothing. Lord we come before you asking that you make us strong to withstand the battles ahead of us. Lord we come before your holy throne recognizing that a stage is where man ascends; an altar is where You descend. Lord may you descend right now. Lord we also know that a stage is for selfish ambition; whilst an altar is for selfless sacrifice, make us selfless in our ways. Always remembering that your way is the way, Lord may your will be done. Amen.’

She asked me to stand up and she led the way out of the chapel, I don’t know what had just happened but I followed her lead.

When we got to the ward, she stood on the door and she let out a little sigh before opening the door widely. I got in and the first thing that greeted us was the scent of medicine.

‘Why are you bothering over a corpse?’ a little voice asked

Mrs. Kazadi moved closer to the bed and held what looked like a hand. ‘I brought you someone.’ She said forcing a smile

She looked at me and signaled me to move forward. I did just that and the sight that I saw was enough to break the strongest person. On the middle of the bed was a frail looking woman, her skin was pale, her head was bald and her veins were showing. Connected to her brain was a tube and some other tubes were connected to her veins leading to drips of water whilst others had blood.

‘You have your father’s eyes.’ She said

I couldn’t hold the tears, she was smiling through her brokenness and her eyes were dark. It’s like life had been sucked out of her

I moved some more and held her hand, she was really warm and something connected us.

‘I am ready to go and face my maker.’ She said looking at me ‘Don’t say that.’ I said my voice almost breaking

‘I hurt you badly my child, your father even more. I have been punished here on earth for my mistakes and I only held on just so I could tell you that I am not sorry for leaving you behind twenty five years ago.’

I looked at her with shock.

‘I know what you are thinking, that even in my dying bed I am still evil.’ It’s like she spoke my mind

‘I spent half of my life regretting ever leaving you behind but the first time I saw you a month ago, I realized it was the best thing I had done. I was a broken piece when I had you, I was selfish and if I stayed I would have instilled all that in you.’ She paused letting out a cough
