‘Karma is a scam, or not.’

 

It has been an awful seven days, everything I have has been taken from me except the orphanage and I thank my inner goddess because somehow I managed to keep it out of the lime light.

 

Our country can be quite pathetic, meddling into people’s business when there is so much dirt that has to be cleaned. The minister of Religious affairs came on board and preached about how wrong an example I am and the hospitals have two weeks grace period in which my patients have to be moved to other hospitals before they can finally be closed.

 

I got served, got everything and more that I deserve and honestly if you were to ask me I have no regrets whatsoever about the life that I lived. It’s called free will for a reason and I wouldn’t have chosen to live my life any other way.

 

 

We have decided to move to Kapiri where Chisenga’s parents left a farm in her name.

 

‘Good morning.’ She greets as I sip on my green tea

 

If anyone had told me that I would be living at a farm I would have laughed in their face, but we all get the shock of our lives at some point.

 

‘Good morning.’ I respond with a smile

 

‘Hope you slept well.’ She says settling into a chair opposite me

 

I am baking bread, here they are no shops or malls close by so whatever you want you have to either cook it or bake it.

 

‘It smells nice in here.’ She adds

 

‘Thank you.’

 

‘Where is Sean?’

 

‘Outside trying to start a garden.’

 

I laugh

 

If that boy turns into a farmer I won’t even be surprised because he has been demonstrating farming skills for a while now.

 

‘This is a nice place you have here by the way.’ I compliment

 

I am actually very proud that she was able to renovate the place with the money that she gets paid, I always wondered where she took her money and now I can’t be more proud.

 

See back in Lusaka she was my house help whilst back home she was boss at a farm, this is true humility and I have learnt a lesson.

 

 

‘Thank you.’ She responds with her warm smile

 

She stands up to leave

 

‘Can I ask you something?’

 

‘Shoot.’

 

‘Why did you continue working for me? I mean look at this place, you can afford a place of your own in Lusaka or you could come here and run this place. Why did you decide to stay back and work for me?’

 

She sighs

 

‘I have never really seen it as working for you.’

 

She pauses

 

‘I mean over the years I learnt that you are different because I have seen how other maids are treated.’

 

‘You have always been my house help and friend.’

 

‘See, that too.’

 

I smile

 

‘You are the only family I have Katie, you and Sean.’

 

‘I was only sixteen when your mother gave me to you for work, coming from the farm and all I was hoping I would work for someone older but then when I saw it was you I hated you.’

 

‘Ah.’ I exclaim shocked

 

 

‘I thought you were young and spoilt because how can someone of your age start living on their own, when you got pregnant I secretly rejoiced thinking you got what you deserved and you would suffer but you proved me wrong.’

 

She pauses

 

‘I have been groomed watching you strive, I watched how as a teenager you struggled through pregnancy. You fought the odds and never let yourself go, how your family treated you didn’t determine how you turned out. And when Sean was born.’

 

She pauses again

 

‘I have loved that child like my own. He was the most beautiful baby I ever came across and I vowed to do everything in my powers to help you with anything just so you can not feel the weight of the world on your shoulders.’ She says in tears

 

‘Chisenga.’ I say my own tears betraying me

 

‘I have not always settled well with your decisions, but I would never judge you. I knew about your life as an escort and yet in the depth of my heart I knew that the day would come when it would all come to pass, I have prayed for you. I have got down on my knees in tears and a faithful heart asking God to change your ways because I have always believed in you.’ She says still crying

 

‘I haven’t been the best of friends I know but how come you have cheered me on in silence?’ I ask

 

‘At times we don’t know what we have until we take time to look deeply within our circles; you might not be my favorite person some days but you are my favorite person of all seasons and Katie you are the elder sister I never had and I love you.’

 

‘Come here.’ I say

 

She comes to where I am and we embrace, crying so hard in each other’s arms.

 

‘Why are the two of you crying?’ Sean asks causing us to laugh

 

 

‘Get away.’ Chisenga and I say at the same time before we laugh this time Sean joining in

 

‘My God Sean what have you been doing?’ I ask looking at his dirty clothes

 

‘Trynna grow some plants mama.’

 

‘And that accent?’

 

‘This is Texas mama.’

 

‘Get out of my presence.’ I say laughing so hard my insides hurt

 

‘Joy looks good on you.’ Chisenga compliments

 

‘Thank you for welcoming us into your home.’ I say with a huge smile

 

‘My home is yours, you made yours mine and I couldn’t think of a way of repaying you. At least let me harbor you.’

 

‘For now.’ I correct

 

‘For now.’ She responds with a smile

‘Am sorry ma’am but the only way for your daughter to be saved is if we perform surgery on her.’ The doctor tells me

 

I look at my husband who looks scared

 

‘She is only but a child.’ I say tears falling uncontrollably

 

 

Mer’vis comes to my side and holds me close, Ezra is here too. Mark has come with his fiancée and Francis is with his wife Leonie.

 

‘Is there any other option?’ George asks

 

‘No, that is the only way.’

 

I allow more tears to fall as I think of my little Brianna

 

‘What do we need to do? Does she have to fly out?’

 

‘I know a very good doctor in the country who can do it, and we will need a lot of blood because she will need it after surgery.’

 

‘I can give you that and please give us the doctor’s contacts so that we reach him.’ I say wiping my tears

 

George holds me tight

 

‘I will need the father’s blood though and the doctor is a female, let me just call her.’ He says and walks away from us

 

I feel a cold chill, because how do I tell George that Brianna is not his daughter? How do I even get the blood that is needed for her surgery when her birth came in a crooked way

I am doing my final rounds when Sean brings my phone, I must say staying in Kapiri has opened my eyes to many things, here I have been able to open up a clinic. Not as big as the ones I had back in Lusaka but at least I am able to help the local people.

 

Chisenga couldn’t have it when I told her I wanted to move out so we are still with her, Sean is in boarding school in Chisamba and being the holidays he is back.

 

 

Urah is on leave and she will be arriving here today with her new man, I can’t wait to meet him because they look extremely happy.

 

‘Mummy for you.’ Sean says

 

I look at the number again, I haven’t heard from him in two years. He used to work for University Teaching Hospital until he opened up his own Clinic.

 

‘Dr. Clinton, what a surprise.’

 

‘Dr. Katie.’ He says lovingly

 

‘What do I owe this call?’

 

‘I have heard about your achievements in Kapiri.’

 

‘Looks like the country hasn’t forgotten me.’

 

‘You are a good Dr., always been.’

 

I smile

 

‘There is a case I want you to review.’

 

‘What is it?’

 

‘I have a patient, she is two and her spine is dislocated. I know you are the only one who can solve the mystery.’

 

‘I will have to look at her.’

 

‘Do you have the right equipments over there?’ He asks

 

I smile

 

‘When did you start underestimating me?’

 

‘I am sorry.’ He says lightly

 

‘I will send you an address, bring her in as soon as possible.’ I say dropping the line
