CONFESSIONS OF AN ESCORT

_17_

(Unedited)

I am just coming from the kitchen when the gate man comes to tell me that there is a Ms. Mer’vis at the gate asking to see me. I only know one person with that name and I am guessing it is her, but what she wants is what I am not sure of.

‘Please let her in.’ I say standing by the door

I watch as the car drives in, it stops and parks just next to mine then a minute later Mer’vis walks out. She is wearing blue jeans and white chiffon top with black sandles. Simple yet from the way she is walking one can tell that there is a mission behind this visit.

‘Do come in.’ I say when she gets to where I am standing

I give her way and she walks into the house gracefully.

Once inside, I close the door behind me and lead us to living room.

‘Bring us some refreshments.’ I say to the elderly house help since Chisenga is still at Urah’s

The room is awfully quiet and I don’t want to start any conversation because I know this is not a social visit.

‘So I am guessing you have an idea as to why I am here.’ She begins

‘No I don’t.’ I say

Honestly I don’t, I am not even trying to be difficult but it could be anything and right now I just don’t know what it is.

She sighs.

‘Ezra told me about the two of you.’

‘Because he tells you everything.’ I say

‘Sarcastic huh?’

I smile at her intelligence

‘Yes because he tells me everything, he told me about the two of you before we started dating. Also before we returned because he didn’t want me to be in some form of surprise after getting here.’

I stare at her waiting to hear where this is going

‘I know Ezra loves you, I don’t know if he is over you but in his heart somewhere I know you are still there. He talks about you, he gives you as an example and there was a time I secretly hated you .’

‘You don’t have to pretend you know, I can tell you still hate me.’

‘Yes I still hate you and one of the major reasons I insisted we come to Zambia is I wanted to prove to him that I was better a woman than you were, that what he felt for you back then was nothing but childhood lust and what we have is mature.’

‘You have been secretly in a competition with someone that doesn’t know you?’ I ask my eyes almost popping out

She eyes me

‘But that is not why I am here.’

‘There is more.’ I say with a sigh

‘I don’t want Sean in my husband’s life.’

I want to laugh, really hard but I restrain myself because I don’t know where all this is going.

‘I will not change my earlier sentiments, there is nothing right about having a child outside wedlock and I am not about to change that because Ezra made a stupid mistake by involving himself in childhood escapades. What the two of you had was sex and if you were both sensible enough you would have used protection and prevented that bastard from happening.’

‘Excuse me?’

‘I am not done talking.’ She says

‘Sean is alive, he is my husband’s son and I accept all that nonsense but I don’t want him to come into our lives. I am going to be Ezra’s wife and I want our life as normal as possible and if we do fight it should be because of internal factors.’

Silence

‘Let me get this straight, you came all the way from God knows where to meet the woman your husband to be was seeing eight years ago. On top of that you discover they have a child together and now you have the audacity to come and insult me, in my own house?’

‘Katie I am not your friend so I won’t pretend to be nice or even to like you, that is why I don’t ever want you to be a part of my life.’

I sigh

‘Mer’vis get out of my house.’ I say standing up

She stands up, then faces me

‘I will leave this place but be rest assured that I am standing by my word. Ezra’s mother adores me and I know she will not allow anything to ruin her son’s perfect wedding, so don’t push me into telling her about all this.’

‘Out now.’ I say

She walks out with the same grace that she came with, I could have fought her. I have the energy and the will power but she is not my problem and so I decide I need to face Ezra because if this problem persists I will not see peace.

I go to the bedroom and carry my purse and car keys, i text Francis and tell him what I am about to do then drive to Ezra’s place. I have not been there in eight years and my heart is in a million pieces but I decide I have to do this.

When I get to the gate, it opens and I notice the car that had brought Mer’vis is parked.

I walk to the front yard and I am met by an elderly lady who looks like the house help.

‘I am here to see Mrs. Mweemba.’ I say warmly

‘Do come in.’ She says

She leads me to the living room and asks me to take a seat, a few minutes later I hear voices and Mrs Mweemba appears with Ezra and Mer’vis. Almost all smiles disappear except her obviously because she can’t recognize who I am.

I stand up when they approach me.

‘Good afternoon ma’am.’ I greet

‘Good afternoon.’ She responds

‘I remember you, Francis’ girlfriend right?’ She asks as we settle down

‘Yes ma’am.’ I respond

‘I hope there is no problem.’

‘Not at all.’ I say

The house help puts refreshments on the table and walks out

‘I don’t want to waste much of your time but I needed to talk to you in the presence of your son here and his wife to be.’

‘Sure my dear go ahead.’ She says

I sigh deeply

‘Eight years ago I came here in tears, to tell you that I was pregnant for your son.’

I pause and look at her face, she is obviously making out what had happened that fateful day

‘I came to tell you that I just wanted him to know what had happened, I didn’t want any sort of help from him or your family. All I needed for him was to know that I was pregnant and he would be a father soon, but you chased me.’

I look at her again

‘You said you knew your son and he was not capable of impregnating a girl like me, you called me a gold digger and a family breaker. You said I was loose and I didn’t have morals, that the family that raised me was broken and needed a lot of fixing because at my age I couldn’t be sleeping around with different men.’

I pause

‘You said my child would look nothing like your son, that even if he was your son’s that Ezra would never come and look at him because he would find a nice girl to marry that would bare him kids.’

I look at Mer’vis

‘I remember that day you told me for lying against your son my path would be uncertain, that the child I would bare would be nothing compared to your child. That he would suffer at the hands of society and would be the dumbest kid in his time.’

‘Katie.’ Sean says but I don’t even spare him a glance

‘For the longest of time I told myself that I was going to do good by me, not just for me but for my child as well. Who you claimed was going to amount to nothing because in your own words I was careless for getting pregnant by your son. But then nothing stays hidden under the sun and I just came to tell you, that like I did eight years ago; I am still telling you that your son impregnated me and as a result I have an eight year child that I have raised on my own. I never came here to ask for help because I never needed you and I won’t start now. So like you chased me that day, I want you to tell your son that he is not capable of impregnating a girl like me and so he should stay away from me and my child because we have been doing so well and we won’t ask for help now.’

I look at Mer’vis

‘And you, I hope today was the last time you ever called my child a bastard because next time I won’t hesitate to go all ghetto on you. I didn’t fight you today because you are not my business, he is my business.’ I say pointing at Ezra

‘Never show up at my house ever again because your mother here knows better about what you can or can’t do as a man, and if you dare take me to court I swear even if it means killing myself in the process I will do it as long as this child remains as my own. Stay as you are, the happy musketeers and leave my child out of your shenanigans.’ I say and stand up to leave
